Cristie Kerr, Suzann Pettersen, Na Yeon Choi and Angela Stanford into semifinal of Sybase Match Play Championship
Sybase Match Play Championship has stepped into the semi-finals with Cristie Kerr, Suzann Pettersen, Na Yeon Choi and Angela Stanford competing for the title, which is taking place at the Hamilton Farms Golf Club in Somerset County.
Wind made fairways crucial and the greens a milestone, which was unachievable. Despite that, Kerr won four holes in the front and two at the back, withdrawing from the last two. Initially, the situation seemed different, when Ai Miyazato marvelled
the crowd with a fabulous birdie at the 10th hole. She repeated a similar action on the 11th hole, when she sank a birdie putt from the rough and decreased the difference between her and Kerr on the scorecard.
Unable to reel some extra points on the later holes, Miyazato decided to call off the last two holes and surrendered the lead into Kerr’s feet.
Seeing her opponent surrender after the 16th hole, Kerr walked to the clubhouse to celebrate a partial victory. When asked about the amount of challenge she faced on the course, Kerr replied, “That's match play. That is why
it is golf in its purest form. No matter what, you have to stay calm and play your own game. If someone hits a good shot, you hit a good shot.”
In the battle of survival between world number 10 Paula Creamer and world number 18 Angela Stanford, the 33-year-old Stanford won. Stanford, who hails from Texas, started out with a slow pace, as she won a single hole against Creamer, who had three
holes to her credit. However, on the back, Stanford came out of her box and birdied four holes that left her with an edge of 2-up over Creamer.
Needless to say, Stanford was happy with the results that were in her favour. She said, “My swing had started to get loose. Getting up and down made me think if I could figure out my golf swing, I might have a chance.”
In the match held between the world number one Choi and Sophie Gustafson, the top seed once again proved her prowess. The Korean won four holes out of the first ten holes and sealed the session with a birdie at the 18th hole,
leaving Gustafson with no option other than to surrender. She won with a score of 2-up.
The last battle was observed between world number four Yani Tseng and world number five Suzann Pettersen. Pettersen won by a birdie, which she made on the final hole to take a 1-up edge over Tseng.
The ladies will meet at 9.30 am according to Texas time in the semifinal to decide the winner of the tournament.
