Cristie Kerr fails to capitalise on hometown support in Founders Cup
Cristie Kerr, who was expected to shine at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup due to home ground and home crowd, could not do her best in the final round of the event.
Kerr, who belongs to Scottsdale, Arizona, played good in the first three rounds, making strokes that consolidated her position on the leaderboard.
Spectators on the course expected much from Kerr, as they welcomed the American star by giving a big cheer-up.
Although her first round was comparatively better than the second one, experts said that she could not make the most of the favourable weather conditions.
She could have scored even better in the first two rounds by making more birdies.
She kicked off the tournament in an impressive style, with fans’ eyes set on her every movement. She carded a 68, putting herself in a comfortable position.
The weather remained calm most of the day, giving her plenty of chances to do what she had planned to.
Kerr’s judgment was good enough to help her avoid making bogeys in the first round. Her bogey-free round turned bad when the American prodigy failed to make enough birdies.
Analysts said that Kerr could have got off to a good start if she had made some more birdies. Kerr fired just 4 birdies, which put a drag on her hard work that paid off in terms of a bogey-free round.
The second round was just as bad, as she fired a 1-over 73. She appeared to be out-of-form, as she missed out on many chances and ended up carding a score that took a toll on her overall position on the leaderboard.
She lost momentum early in the day, despite the comfortable weather that benefitted players. She recorded six bogeys in the round.
Kerr said that she could have reversed the situation if she had been a bit more sensible on Friday. She tried her best to offset the negative impact made in first two rounds by doing well in the third.
Her third round score was a decent 6-under 66, which helped her finish the tournament tied for the 5th.
"I saw this kind of round out there for me," Kerr said. "I was really frustrated (Friday), but I came out today with a better attitude and got control of my mind. I felt like I needed to have a low round to get back in there today".
