Cristie Kerr finally ends victory drought
American Cristie Kerr finally ended her protracted victory drought after she racked up a title at the Lorena Ochoa Invitational 2012, held last week at Guadalajara Country Club, Mexico.
Kerr, who had won her last title at the LPGA Championship in June 2010, had been desperately seeking to get back to winning ways, but the latest victory in Mexico has given her a huge mental
boost.
Having got off to a solid start at the four-day LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) tournament last week, Kerr shot a 67 in the first round, however, other contenders appeared to have
dominated the leaderboard at early stages of the event.
Despite shooting a 67 on the opening day, the American star had to settle for a tie for fourth position on the leaderboard .
American Angela Stanford, Michelle Wie and Candie Kung remained strong on Thursday as they posted a 66 each to share an early lead.
However, Kerr boosted her position in the second round after she shot a 69, which helped her rise to the third position. She kept the pressure on her rivals intact in the third round as well,
as she carded a 67.
Stanford, who had convinced herself of a major gain right from the start of the tournament, got into a nail-biting battle against Kerr in the final round.
Kerr started the fourth round with an aim to tear apart all her rivals. She opened the round with a birdie on the first hole. She then parred the next four holes, but failed to judge the ball
well on the greens of difficult par-3 6th and ended up carding her first bogey.
Regaining her composure, the LPGA titan launched three straight birdies on the 7th, difficult par-3 8th and 9th hole.
Speaking to the LPGA Tour at the end of the tournament, Kerr said that she is more than happy after winning a title.
“It feels amazing. You know, coming in those last couple of holes it didn’t feel like I had won before,” said Kerr who has now jumped to 11th position in the Women’s World Golf
Rankings following the fresh victory.
“I kind of just squeaked in, but I won by a shot, that’s all that it takes. I’ve lost plenty of tournaments by a shot, but winning by a shot feels a lot better”.
