Cristie Kerr fires 72 in first round at Hoylake
American Cristie Kerr, who bowed out of the Kingsmill Championship after she missed the cut, got off to a good start at the ongoing Ricoh Women’s British Open 2012 as she shot a 72 in the first round.
Kerr is being regarded as one of the strongest contenders for the Ricoh Women’s British Open, being staged at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, United Kingdom, but her woeful performance in the last tournament
— Kingsmill Championship — had put her in intense scrutiny.
Despite missing out on a big opportunity at Kingsmill Championship, where she was defending her title, Kerr has emerged as one of the star performers at Hoylake, as she has managed to find a spot in the top
20, given the current stats.
Commentators said that 72 is a good score at Hoylake, as most players are not used to playing in rough weather conditions. Although wind has eased and the conditions are perfect for the course at the moment,
non-European players are finding it a bit hard to score big.
Kerr kicked off the first round with confidence as she sank a birdie on the first hole. She, however, could not maintain her momentum and carded two bogeys on the third and fourth hole.
The Ricoh Women’s British Open, a major championship on the Ladies Professional Golf Association (LPGA) and Ladies European Tour (LET), has seen South Koreans storm to the top once again. Although there are
three rounds remaining, Asian players have once again proved their worth by seizing several positions in the top 50.
Kerr shared her thoughts at the end of the round, saying she is pretty happy after getting off to a flying start, and will try to come up with a more solid plan for the remaining rounds.
“You know what, from what I understand, today is going to be the nicest day so we had to shoot a good score today,” the American golfer said.
“Actually, you know, what I thought it was going to be an advantage, and then with the weather delays on Saturday night in Richmond, we miss-connected and we didn't get here till Monday morning. So it ended
up not being an advantage”.
