Cristie Kerr firm to atone for Founders Cup lapses at the US Open 2012
Cristie Kerr, who could not live up to the expectations of her home crowd at the RR Donnelley LPGA Founders Cup 2012, appears to have atoned for the lapses that hampered her from finishing in the top-3 at Scottsdale.
Kerr is gearing up for the second major championship of the season — US Women’s Open — scheduled to be staged from July 5-8, at the Blackwolf Run Golf Course, Kohler.
The 34-year-old, who hails from Scottsdale, was considered the hot favourite to win the Founders Cup.
Although the weather conditions at the venue were quite suitable for the match, helping players to perform above average, Kerr could not make the most of the opportunities that came in terms of good winds and home ground.
She messed up her position in the first two rounds, as she looked completely devastated on most of the holes. Carding a 73 in the second round put a deep dent in her overall score.
The American star tried to bounce back in the third round in an attempt to improve her position on the leaderboard. She registered an impressive 6-under 66 to put some pressure on her rivals.
Analysts have said that although Kerr was expected to shine at Scottsdale, the psychological pressure was massive. The current world number one Yani Tseng performed amazingly well, winning the title.
Kerr improved her game in the first major championship of the year — Kraft Nabisco Championship. She finished tied for the 22nd.
The veteran star grabbed the headlines when she won her first major championship at the 2007 US Women’s Championship.
She has racked up 14 victories on the LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) Tour and one on the Futures Tour.
In addition to proving her mettle at the US Women’s Open, Kerr also grabbed the coveted title of the LPGA Championship in the 2010 season — another major event on the LPGA.
Experts have said that winning two major titles in her career has certainly boosted Kerr’s confidence, but she has been struggling to find her lost form in order to get on victory track.
The field at the 2012 US Open will be tougher, with the participation of the defending champion So Yeon Ryu and Paula Creamer who won the 2010 edition of the tournament.
