Cristie Kerr walks off Kingsmill after missing the cut
American Cristie Kerr, who sought to defend her title at the ongoing Kingsmill Championship, faltered in the first two rounds and failed to make the cut.
Kerr got off to a shaky start as she posted a 72 in the first round at Williamsburg, Virginia, United States. Although she put up a tough fight throughout the first day, her rivals made the most of favourable course conditions early in the morning on Thursday and managed to post good scores.
Kerr was regarded as the strongest contender in a field packed with almost all the top-ranked LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) contenders, but her below-average performance disappointed American spectators.
The LPGA Tour, which is already undergoing a transition these days, has seen American players struggling to regain their lost glory in the recent past.
With Asian players having snatched most of the top positions in the Women’s World Golf Rankings, things are becoming more and more intense for the US players.
Kerr looked down and out in the second round as well, as she carded four bogeys and just one birdie. She kicked off the round in an unimpressive style as she carded a bogey on the very first hole.
On the back nine, the American star moved ahead with the same pace and missed several good chances to make a birdie-putt.
Commentators said that despite the first round having been hurt by darkness, most of the players performed well, as they managed to post solid scores early.
American Paula Creamer, however, remained the best player on the squad so far. Creamer got off to a flying start as she shot a 65 in the opening round and a 67 in the second.
“I can't control what happens the next three days what people do, but for me this is a big confidence booster and just going out and playing the game that I know I can play and that I've had in me for so long,” Creamer said while speaking at the end of the first round.
“It's been a struggle this year.  It's nice to be able to go on, have a front line like I did, feel what it feels like being in the zone, that kind of thing, just seeing it and picking it up out of the hole, that kind of emotional feeling”.
