Nintendo’s first-ever HD console Wii U has been under a lot of criticism because of its specifications and performance capabilities, which were and are still said to be below the likes of Sony’s current-generation console PlayStation 3 and Microsoft’s current-generation console Xbox 360.
Now that the system is out in the market and reached the houses of thousands of people, fingers are being raised at its performance. Comparisons based on sales are also being made between the latest console by the Japan-based company and its predecessor Wii.
A lot of critics and journalists are stating correctly that the Wii U was unable to perform as well as Wii in the market during the first-few months of its launch.
It was also highlighted in the recent weeks that during the first holiday season after launch, the sales figure of Wii U were not as impressive as Wii.
It is important to understand here that the previous Nintendo console made its way into the market under different circumstances with a different environment, whereas the latest console has coming out in a different market.
Currently, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 have spent a great deal of time in the market, thus creating a huge install base. The Wii U, on the other hand, came into the market with only a few games, which did not some of the most prolific franchises in the list. This created a huge challenge for the console and the company itself.
The consumers have become more unforgiving than ever and were therefore extremely cautious before spending their valuable money on a new gaming console that arrived in the market.
At the same time, the gaming consoles also find their popularity declining as the smartphones and tablets continue to gain prevalence.
The resources required to develop games for the contemporary devices is not that high, which have left the gate open for indie and even well-established developers and publishers to enter. The low cost of development also result in low cost of games.
With such a strong footing that smartphones and tablets have in the market, not to mention the huge install base of the current-generation consoles of Sony and Microsoft, the sales figures achieved by Nintendo’s first-ever console can be regarded as nothing short of impressive.
It is not fair to draw a comparison between the Wii U and Wii under the circumstances. The former also deserves a little more time.
With every passing day, the confidence of publishers and developers is growing in the Wii U. This is a great sign for Nintendo and its loyalist as it goes to prove that the new hardware has more potential that what the analysts and critics have been predicting throughout the previous year.
The hype surrounding Wii U is also associated with its next-generation status. The unique tablet-inspired controller GamePad for Nintendo’s new console promised and indeed delivered an innovative gameplay. It is being said by the company that the console will continue to evolve with the passage of time. This claim holds a great deal of importance as it will help the system become future-proof.
Released in North America on November 18, 2012, before arriving in Europe and Australia on November 30, 2012, and eventually arriving in Japan on December 8, 2012, Nintendo’s first-ever dual-screen gaming console does not deserve the criticism that it is getting by some critics and analysts.
