  1. The chain stitch is just the basis of crochet.  It only makes a thick length of yarn or thread.  You need to learn to put your hook in the second chain of a row, catch the thread with the hook, and pull it through the chain.  Then you pull the thread through both loops on the hook, and you have made a single crochet.  Keep doing that and you will be able to make lots of things.  Go to:

    http://crochet.about.com/library/blbegin...

    for more help.

about.com is also one of the best places go go to learn to quilt.  Also look up quilt guilds in your area.  They love to help new quilters learn to quilt.  Another way, if you can afford classes, is to go to a fabric or quilt shop for lessons.

  2. These sites can help you learn to quilt:

    http://quilting.about.com/

    http://www.quilterscache.com/

    http://blockcentral.com/index.shtml

    http://www.qnm.com/

  3. I would do both. They work with different elements: fabric vs. yarns. And you have to agree that some project would work better with one than the other.

ie: baby socks, scarf = crochet

    blanket, pillow cases = quilting

As for how, try a little search on the web or go to Walmart, they have some cheap books that can teach you other styles, stitches. Good luck and have fun.

  4. The chains make the foundation chain to start on.  Do you mean single crochet?  For good crochet diagrams look at Lion Brand\

If you want to make an afghan just make the foundation as long as you want the afghan to be wide, and then single crochet every stitch.  You could also put stripes in by changing colors
