Question:

Crocheted Granny Square Afghan Question?

I have made several granny square afghans in the past (one big granny square, not several small ones sewn together) and all of the patterns have the rounds starting and ending in the corner. For this pattern that I'm using, the rounds start and end in the middle of one edge, and you can see where I've changed colors. Is this normal, and is there anything I can do to make it less noticible?

  1. It is just one of those unfortunate things that is hard to avoid.  It's usually more noticeable to the person who made it than anyone else.

When weaving in the ends, make sure you weave them along the portion of the square with the same colour.  Sometimes, in the weaving in, you can pull it a bit tight which can help the colours blend more.

One of the other things I do when changing colours on a granny square, is I am very careful to make a very small slip knot, and make sure it is on the "wrong side" of the square.  I also do several slip stitches along the top before gettting to the next slot of stitches will also helps the transition look less noticeable.

Hope that helps -and good luck!

  2. I find that, when I change colors, it always looks better if I take the ends that were tied together, and thread them through several stitches near that spot.  It helps the colors blend a little nicer, and then you don't have ends sticking up either.
