Question:

Crocheting- what am I doing wrong?

I haven't crocheted in years and I'm more than a little rusty.

I crocheted a chain of 25, to practice with... got to the end and crocheted 3 extra chains (as my granny taught)... went to the first chain (3 back), went through and had two loops... wrapped the yarn over, went through one loop, then through two and closed it off with a chain... went to the next chain over and continued to the end... crocheted a chain of three and started the next round with a bigger loop (yarn over, having 3 loops, going through 2 loops, then the last 2)

I looks "ruffled", as if I have too many chains somewhere.

  1. I can't tell from the pic but don't understand the ending. Did you turn and then chain 3?I usually turn then make a double crochet in the third st from the end.   Here is a link to hopefully help with some examples. You have to get in the habit of counting your stitches after every row and maybe use a smaller hook . It's trial and error until you get it the way you want it. Don't give up!

  2. from your picture you are working more than 1 st into some of the chains which is why your work is curling into a ruffle.

in each of the foundation chains you should be only working 1 st.

try working your chain with a larger hook so you can see the separate chains better and keep count of how many stitches on each row to maintain the same number each row.
