  1. breeding roses really is a fun way to grow your own. A rose will never produce an exact replica of itself by seed, so each new rose is an unknown, and never before see flower.

Here's the easy way to do it. First choose the rose you wish to supply the pollen. Cut off the anthers, and leave them to dry for a while in a paper bag, in the hot water cylinder cupboard overnight perhaps.

Then choose the rose you want to bear the seeds. Make sure its not fully open, as you dont want it to have been pollinated already. Pluck off the petals, and dab a little of the dried pollen into the center of it.

Now, cover this with a small plastic bag and a twist tie, for a few days. this will keep out insects. Wait until the hip has set, and began to turn orange. This can take from a few weeks, to 2 months.

next, you pick the rosehip, and separate the seeds out. Put them in a jar, and cover with clean sand. Place this in the fridge for about 8 weeks. Doing this often helps with the germination rate.

In early spring, remove the seeds, and pot into small containers. Within a few weeks you may see the first roses starting to appear. Most wont flower in their first year.

Minis possibly will flower early, but the old fashioned roses and climbers generally wont flower until the following year.

  2. What?

Now, when you cross breed anything you can only see the result in their offspring.

First you pollinate the flower with the pollen from other flower. When you wait until this pollinated flower produces seeds. You sow the seeds and grow them into mature, flowering plants - these plants can have different colour from their parents.
