Question:

Cross country helmet pom poms?

I'm interested in making a green/white pom pom for the top of my helmet cover for cross country, but i'm not sure how to go about this, and I can't find anything on the internet about it.

I was wondering if anybody here could tell me how to do this. I talked to someone at a show once who made their own, so I would like to try to make one (so the colors match) before I buy one.

It would look like this: http://www.u5uk.com/you/elico/images/artimg/FTE48-7/Elico%20Lycra%20Skull%20Cap%20Covers%20With%20Pom-Pom.jpg

  1. Been a long time since I made pompoms!  But it's fun and easy.

First, make yourself a pompom jig.  Cut out a piece of cardboard in the shape of half a donut.  The width of the donut side should be half the diameter you want for the pompom.

Then, take the first color yarn (something that'll comb out nice and fluffy) and wind in around the donut half.  It should go from the middle of the hole part and all around the outside part.  Make it nice and thick.

Tie it off by taking a large needle and pulling a thread under all the wound threads on the side.  Take both ends of that thread and pull it down so it's got all the wound threads at the bottom of the donut hole part.  Make a knot and pull it real tight, then finish the knot by making it a square not.

Take scissors.  Insert the lower blade under the wound threads, then pull it up to the outside edge of the donut.  Cut through all the threads.

You now have a half a pompom.  Do the same thing with the other color.

Tie them together, fluff them up with a brush or comb, and trim the length (it'll probably be a little raggy).

It's easier to do than to explain.  If it's not clear, just ask!  And remember, practice makes perfect.
