Question:

Cross pollination of fruit trees?

I am new to gardening. Want to plant fruit trees in my backyard. I have an apple and an apricot tree. I have planted them both in areas where they can get enough sunlight. Do I need to buy one more tree of each kind for cross pollination? Apple trees are not available now :( What will happen to my trees if I dont try to cross pollinate them and just plant one tree of each?

  1. If they're not self pollinating, they will keep growing, but will not produce fruit until there's another tree near by.

  2. You may not need to. Apple trees can be cross-pollinated by ornamental crab apples, and bees can fly quite a long way, so you may get pollination without having to plant another apple tree. Similarly, many apricots can be fertilized by peaches, nectarines, ornamental cherries.

However, to be sure of getting fruit, you should plant another tree of each type. Make sure it is compatible variety and that it flowers at the same time. This information should be available on the label of the trees you bought or on the web site of the supplier.

  3. I'm not a professional gardener but I believe your tree will survive in the meantime it just won't flourish as much as a cross-pollinated tree.

  4. They won't grow any fruit, I have two apple trees in my backyard. they are little too far apart so the birds and bugs, and bees have to do the cross pollinating, but if one doesn't get cross pollinated by the other then there will be no apples that year...so to answer your question you have to get both a male and a female in order for your fruit trees to actually bear fruit..hope this helps
