Question:

Cross pollination?

I've been hearing that I shouldn't plant different types of melons and peppers close together in case they are cross pollinated. Its too late as I planted my garden months ago but I have watermellon, canteloup, and pumpkins all growing in a patch along with bell peppers and hot peppers growing together. Could I end up with a watermellon that tastes like a pumpkin? Or a flaming hot bell pepper?

Just wondering what I may end up with....

  1. I have a similar garden.  The way I understand it, is that cross pollination will not affect the fruit/vegetable that you are growing (no habanero cantaloupes!).  The only problem that may occur is if you save some of the seeds from this year's plants to plant next season.  Those plants could be affected.  I just buy new plants each summer for my vegetable garden, so it doesn't affect me.  The pumpkin-watermelon does sound interesting, though . . .
