Question:

Cross stitch canvas for needlepoint?

I have a few cross stitch printed canvas designs/kits. I am not familiar with cross stitch, but I know how to needlepoint. I'm wondering if anyone knows if I can use the printed canvas and do needlepoint as opposed to cross stitch?

  1. You can but the results won't be exactly what the picture depicts in the kit.  You should try cross stitch.  Its just as easy as needlepoint.  Just make sure that your stitches always cross the same way.  Make sure the first stitch always goes, say left to right.  Then the crossing stitch must always go from right to left.  If not, your texture will be off in the piece.  If you have a kit there should be a diagram of how to do the stitches you need.  I've done both as well as crewel embroidery and I prefer cross stitch out of the three.

  2. Yes, you can. Both require the same simple weave fabrics for good results.

the difference between the 2 techniques is that needlepoint all stitches go in one direction and only one direction. Cross Stitch the bottom stitches start like the needle point then you go back across the line in the opposite direction.  Not much difference at all. Try it you might like it as well as needlepoint.

I do both and other embroidery projects as well!

the only thing with the printed cross stitch is that it might not be on grain, so watch for that little problem. Counted cross stitch and needle point use the same rules and charts.
