  1. You will need documents to prove citizenship in order to enter USA.

If you are all born in Canada then US Customs/Border services want to see a passport or two pieces of identification, preferably a birth certificate and driver licence.

Note the term "born in Canada" is important, because you will be asked this question.   If anyone was born outside Canada, even if they have subsequently become Canadian citizens it will help if they have a Canadian passport with them, or at least a citizenship card, in addition to the other two pieces of identification.

Be aware also that you should be very straightforward in answering all questions when entering USA.

Universally, American Border officials have limited personalities when it comes to humour: no matter how lightly you do it, they will get annoyed.

If they get too annoyed you will all be delayed.

Additional note.....as of February, 2009, passports will be required for all persons entering USA, including USA citizens, regardless of the means of travel.

The passport requirement already applies for travel by air, but for road /rail transportation, the previous information still applies today.

  2. that depends if you are Canadian Citizens.  The answers above are true.  If you're family are not Canadian Citizens... don't even try without a passport.

  3. Passports are not required for LAND travel between Canada and the U.S. until July1, 2009.

  4. I live in Windsor, Ontario, and cross the border into Michigan all the time.

Assuming you're all Canadian citizens, the following documents are required for a LAND crossing:

    (1) valid government- issued photo ID, such as your driver's licence, and

    (2) your original birth certificate.

Not one or the other, but both.

Of course, a passport is always preferable, but not necessary until at least June, 2009.  Presently, the passport requirement is only if you are FLYING into the States from Canada.

Note:  If you happen to be travelling with any minors who are unaccompanied by their parent(s), they will need a note from their parent(s) allowing them to cross the border, with a telephone number where they can be reached if there are any questions.  Also, a minor only requires their birth certificate; no photo ID is required of them.

  5. yes you do need a passport or a birth certificate to prove that you are a citizen or canada or the u.s check the customs website for america for crossing the border to u.s

  6. Yep you need a passport my mom who is an american cits. Had to have her passport to get back home from vancouver.

  7. As long as everyone is either Canadian or American they can cross a land border without passport until next year. You already need a passport to cross by air.
