Question:

Crossing the Canada border?

I know a DUI, OUI, DWI on your record within 10 years you are supposedly denied entry into Canada. What if you have "driving to endanger?" On my license it only says "suspended under court order" if a cop processed it. is that enough to deny me entry? Or will I even have to show my license if I just show them my passport? My license has been fine and active for over 2 years now.

  1. This depends a great deal on if you are entering Canada as a tourist, or if you are applying to immigrate.  If you show your passport, your licence won't be required.  That's not to say they won't ask to see it, but its doubtful.  Your passport really gives you authorization to enter unless your name pops up with some criminal type flags.

  2. When you show your passport you usually do not have to show any other form of id, unless you are asked to. BUT they may ask if you do have any criminal convictions or anything that might hinder your entry into Canada.  Sometimes they do sometimes they do not, depends on the crossing and the border official.  or Sometimes they will take your id inside with them and enter your info into the computer and then come back and ask if you have a criminal record...they know you do because they have just seen it. So being honest if you are asked is going to be your best policy. Because telling an untruth can get you barred from Canada for life. If they do not ask....you are not required to tell them.

You have the option of contacting the Canadian Border Services to get a waiver, but that does take time, so if you know you are going on a specific date and will have a lot of time before your travel you can do that and save yourself a lot of grief at the border.

Edit: when they run your info at the border they get a very detailed summary of what you have on your record, so anything you have will show, bear in mind they do consider how long it has been since your conviction and if you have stayed out of trouble since then. It is convictions that show up on your record that prevent your entry.

When we show our passport we have never been asked for our driver's license.

  3. When you show your passport  they will also ask you for your driver's license if you are driving through the border.  If you have a moving violation noted on it - be expected to be turned back.
