  1. The Crosman Storm XT is considered an entry level springer.

You can pick one up from Wal-Mart for $99

    Crosman Storm XT - Specs

All of the Crosman rifles in that price range are reasonable powerful and reasonable accurate, what they are not, is well made or durable.

    >>How long will it last<<

It would depend on how you use the rifle, and how well you take care of it. They are not built for heavy use. If you plan to shoot 500-1000 pellets a week, it's probably not going to last long. If your only planned use is to pop a squirrel every now and then(pest control) , it might last for many years.

    >>Max range<<

About 400 yards would be the maximum range the pellet could fly - The maximum "effective" range for hunting small game will be around 50 yards. Don't expect 1000fps with average weight pellets, 900fps would be more like it.

Example of hunting with an 850fps .177 caliber air rifle

Jim Chapman - Hunting with his fav small game air rifle, the Beeman C1 .177(850fps). He takes a jackrabbit at 44 yards with one shot to the head. This is not an irresponsible stunt, but it is near the limit of the Beeman C1s capability

The 8.3gr RWS Superdome would have still retained 574fps & 6.07fpe

IMO it takes around 6.0fpe at impact, with a well placed(head) shot to make a clean, humane kill on small game(rabbit, squirrel)

    >>Break barrel<< I prefer break barrel springers for hunting

    >>Can it kill a Squirrel<< Absolutely - With a well placed shot you can take a squirrel out to 50 yards or so. Though I think you will find that most of your shooting will be within 35, as mine is.

    >>Pellets<< All airguns are very particular about the pellets they prefer(accuracy). You will need to experiment with a few until you find the ones your rifle is most accurate with.

Quality pellets at a reasonable cost

    Crosman Premier Domed Lights

    RWS Superdomes

    Beeman Silver Ace

    JSB Exacts

I would start with the first two, then if you're not happy with the results, try others.

    >>Sighting-in<< A 900fps air rifle(.177) shooting an RWS Superdome(8.3gr) pellet has a very flat trajectory out to around 48 yards. If you sight in at 42 you will be 1/2in low at 8 yards - right on at 14 - 1/2in high at 28 - then 1/2in low again at 48. >This is an estimate, I would need the fps numbers from your rilfe/pellet/scope combination to give you a more exact anwer, but, this should be very-very close.

If you want a really nice rifle, take a look at the RWS 34 $187-$225 depending on the stock and package.

The "Diana" RWS 34 is a powerful, accurate, very durable air rifle that comes with a lifetime warranty, from a company(Dianawerks RWS) that has been building quality airguns since 1890.

If you are just looking for an inexpensive pest control air rifle. The Tech Force 34(TF34) $55 will do the job. My Dad has one for keeping the squirrels away from his bird feeders/houses
