i have never ridden a crotch rocket before, or any motorized bike for that matter. im taking my motorcycle lesson in a few months and taking motor cycle lessons to. whats the best size for me to start out with. im thinking of buying new or almost new. im really fond of the 08 yamaha r6 but im begining to think that might be to much power.

should i just buy a smaller not brand new bike and wait till im ready for a 600 or just go for it and get the r6

  1. Take the motorcycle lesson.

After the lesson, you will see for yourself if you know how to handle a motorcycle and know if you can control the speed.  If you don't know how to control your throttle and control the speed after taking lessons, then re-take lessons until you succeed because if you can't control the speed whether you are on a 250cc or a 1000cc, you shouldn't get on a motorcycle at all.  There's no such thing as too much power, only riders who are too stupid or too careless.

After lessons, choose a motorcycle for yourself, your own skills, your own comfort and your own affordabilty.

  2. the cost to insure a R6 is thru the roof

the insurance costs on a FZ6 is less than half than a R6

The FZ6 has the same engine as the R6, but the FZ6 is slower than the R6

top speed of the R6 is 155-160 mph

top speed of the FZ6 is 140-148 mph

you may hold up traffic cause the FZ6 is slower, but you will get less speeding tickets and save big money on insurance

  3. I would get something like a 500 Ninja first and then maybe go for a 600 supersport !

It all depends on how much self control you have.....the R6 could get you in trouble pretty fast !

  4. If you are taking lessons then there should be no problem starting on a 600. Everybody recommends the 250 which is just fine as well but you should get what YOU want. The 600 will only go as fast as you turn the throttle.

If you practice what you learn in the class you should be fine.

Edit. 600cc is not a supersport bike. Many people start on a 600 including me. Going new may not be wise since a drop will be more costly.

I'm sorry to say it but you came to the wrong place for an answer. You won't hold up any traffic on a FZR. These answers are rediculous!

Nobody is happy on a Ninja 500. Those bikes are butt ball ugly! take Lane's advice, get an 04 R6.

  5. Every young man wants a Yamaha.  I was no different.  However even if you can afford it, I would suggest something lower down with a more upright seating position.

You have to understand that enjoyment can commence only after you have overcome fear.  If your dream bike scares the s*** out of you, how could that equal enjoyment.  It is better to ride safe and live to tell the tale rather than to be a flash in the pan.

Drive a Honda 250 for a while and just take it from there.  The world ain't gonna end tomorrow, you know !

  6. I don't care who says and how much riding experience they have, I would not suggest starting on a 600cc supersport bike.  They have alot of hidden power and you can very easily lose control of the bike.  I am a member on a forum for new bike riders.  Take a look at the link and view some of the reviews and ask questions.  Everybody on this site is a new rider or a rider with great suggestions.  Good Luck

  7. Well first of all the R6 is a 600, just for the record.  But since your a begginer to the motorcycle world, you would want to start off with an older bike.  Mainly because how would you feel to drop a $10,000  bike, compared to dropping a $5,000 dollar bike?  Try looking into the 04-06 R6. Its a great year for that bike nice and fast in the top end, plus it has the best suspention in its class those years.  The 600's are a good bike to start out on, so dont let anyone talk you down to a ninja 250 (like ive seen a lot of people do).

But yeah just think about the things like, insurance on a new bike compared to an older one.  the cost of repairs on the older bike as to the new ones.  Obviously repairs are gonna cost more on the newr stuff.  But as far as performance goes, nearly all 600's are the same in power, its just really small differences in each group.

So yeah good luck with what ever you choose, and pay attention in the bike lessons, you will learn a LOT.
