Crown Counsel, the most appealing option in Shepshed Handicap at Leicester
A good case can be made for several of the contestants in Tuesday’s class 3 Shepshed Handicap, but Crown Counsel seems to be the most intriguing horse. Mark Johnston’s 4-year-old ran pretty decently in a higher grade at York last month.
In the class 2 Betfair. Don't Settle For Less Stakes (Handicap), the bay colt performed above expectations. He broke well to run side by side with the leader early on. Raising many eyebrows, the dashing runner led over 2f out, and kept running well until
the final furlong.
Under Luke Morris, he lost rhythm in the last 100 yards. As a result, he was pushed down to the fifth spot. Owned by Sheikh Hamdan Bin Mohammed Al Maktoum, the son of Invincible Spirit returned to form in mid August, when finding only Wannabe King too strong
in the Tennent's Lager Handicap at Ayr.
A consistent effort helped him go second inside the final furlong, but he failed to reach the winner, and missed the chance by two and a quarter lengths. After two solid performances, Crown Counsel is in good shape, and can carry forward the momentum to
put up an excellent effort today.
He is all set to face seven powerful runners. The competition will be for a handsome cash prize worth £6,663. The 1-mile 60-yard event is going to be started at 16:50 GMT.
Chosen Character’s supporters are still clueless that what went wrong last twice. The 4-year-old gathered plenty of praise by striking hat-trick early in the season. He, however, suddenly lost his rhythm after three comprehensive wins, and faced a couple
of unlucky defeats lately.
In the hands of Natasha Eaton, he made a few slight mistakes last time, which prevented him from ending up among top-3. There is no doubt over his abilities, but it will be interesting to see how he handles the situation to avoid further misery.
The real clash will be between Crown Counsel and Chosen Character. The former is coming off a very good effort in a hot race at York, and will be the one to beat today. Good luck to all the horses.
