Question:

Crowns/retainer question?

Last year or so I finished wearing my braces and had a fixed retainer installed on my top and bottom teeth.

I halfway through getting 2 crowns on my front teeth and the dentist had to snap the retainer off.

Will I have to buy it again? Or will they do it again free?

Wil I even need it?

  1. Yes, you should get it put back on and your dentist will likely do so. I'm guessing that right now you are in temporary crowns while the lab makes your permanent ones. So your dentist wouldn't do anything about the retainer with the temporary crowns. Once the permanent crowns are cemented in, another bonded retainer can be placed on those crowns just like on your natural teeth. While your general doc isn't an orthodontist, he/she is perfectly qualified to place a bonded retainer. I'm pretty sure they won't charge you for this, but that does depend on your dentist.

Another alternative is, as the poster above mentioned, a clear removable retainer. Having one of those made likely would result in a fee, but you may prefer to have that than have something bonded to your new crowns.

Discuss it with your dentist. I am certain, he/she did not remove your retainer without having a plan in mind on what to do about it.

    Good luck!

  2. i accidently broke the permanent retainer...so my ortho made me a clear removable one adn had to put a pressure point on it to make push one of my teeth back into its place.

im pretty sure (becaus ei had insurance0 i got mine for free...

you should go back to your ortho and tell them what happened.....

since it was your dentist who did it i dont think youd have to pay?

if you dont get one, then your teeth may shift back to where they used to be!!!
