  1. There are some companies that are less cruel than others; however, I'm sorry to say there is no such thing as "cruelty free" meat. Kosher, despite the principals it is based on, is often no less cruel than standard killing. Search youtube for kosher slaughter houses if you have the stomach for it.

Firstly, these companies run a business. To individually "put down" every animal gently (like you would a terminally ill person/animal) requires more money than it is worth.

Secondly, even if animals had a happy life could be "put down" peacefully... to me this would still not be ethically acceptable. You are depriving that animal of its life, if that life was happy, that does not decrease the will of that animal to live (in fact, I would say it would increase it).

Is it morally acceptable to painlessly kill a happy, healthy mother of two just because she has had a "good life"? No.

I think the same applies to non-human animals as well.

Sorry to be harsh, the truth isn't always a pleasant thing to hear.

  2. I have never heard of any such company.

The ONLY way that I know that you would be 100% sure is to raise the animal yourself or know the person that you are getting your meat and poultry from.

In the part of Texas that I live in, I actually know people that raise their own meat.

I am wondering why you asked this in the Vegetarian & Vegan section......

  3. I doubt there are any. Like people have said, google kosher slaughterhouses. They aren't like you imagine.

  4. Depends.  They either all are, or none are.  Most people here will tell you they are all cruel.  I think basiclly none of them are.

Cruelty is a matter of opinion.  I think it's cruel to make someone sit through a Barbra Streisand concert while they are sober; yet others pay $500 for a single ticket.  It is a matter of opinion.  What some say is "cruel" at a stockyard to me is the tried and true method of efficiently bringing food to people at a reasonable cost.

  6. You should try Kosher foods. You can buy kosher foods at most grocery stores, including Wal-mart.
