Cruise Question?!?

i was just wondering...when you go to a port like Jamaica or Haiti or any other places on a cruise ship then are those places safe and does a lot of crime go on there?!

You just need to use your common sense....and if you think something may not look right ....then follow your instincts.

We had an incident where we rented mopeds at Nassau.....we rode to Paradise Island...and when we went to park the bikes to go down to the beach ......a guy ( teenager) ran up to us.. .LOL..saying he was "valet" and that he would park the bikes for us.  We are from NY...... our "street smarts" told us....... nah,,,, something is not right ....LOL ..... so we told him no thanks.....and walked away. So just be careful with things like that.

Oh my goodness dosent anyone ever leave the safety of their home anymore have been to almost every island in the carribean {some like Jamaica and Bahamas several times} and so long as you treat people with respect you will get along fine. No its probably not a great idea to go wandering down some dark alley alone late at night there but i doubt that is such a great idea even in your own little town. Just use common sence the cruise ship will offer many suggested trips. Take one of those get out see part of the islands and enjoy yourself.

As always watch your back no matter the port.  If possible stay in a group especially if you plan to travel off the beaten path.   What you also need to remember is to be safe on board too.  Don't forget that you are not in the US with US laws.  Crime happens on board and safety can be an issue.  Always keep your wits about you and don't take risks that you normally wouldn'd take on land.  It is a vacation so have fun,  but always remember that you are on a ship and think of your safety first.

The port in Hait is safer than the street outside your house. The beach where the ship stops is completely secluded. The only Haitians allowed in are vendors with a license. There are big walls and security guards. You are not allowed to leave the area that is being rented by Royal Carribean.

Most ports are safe if you are careful. Some, like those in Jamaica, have more crime than more upscale places like Grand Cayman, for example.

Jamaica is infamous for the tenacity of its street vendors, but if you ignore them or simply say "No thanks", they usually go away.

The only port of call in Haiti that I'm aware of is Labadee, which is Royal Caribbean's private beach. It's completely isolated, so nothing to worry there.

In general, as in any other place, be aware of your surroundings, follow the advice of tour guides, don't venture too far off the beaten path, and you should be fine. If you're worried, take a shore excursion in ports where you feel less confident. That way, you'll be part of a group the whole time.

Ive been on lots of cruises, however never to the ports you are speaking of.  Most of the time the ports are safe (there are bad areas on all of the islands so find out where they are before you travel so that you can avoid them).  The people are usually pretty friendly as well... you have to remember that most of their money comes from torists so they are friendly because if you buy something from them they can feed their families at the end of the night.  This is especially true on some of the poorer islands.  Also, there are cruise consultants on the ship that will help you decide what to do at each port of call and will be able to tell you if there are any scams or places you should avoid.  Enjoy your cruise!  Ill be going on one to Bermuda in October myself!!! :)  "Come sail Away!"

When the cruise ships choose the destinations to port they have to pick safe places, or safe times to visit rather.  I went to San Juan, Puerto Rico and usually that is a not-so-busy "scary" place, but the cruise chose to visit on Christmas day, and doing so there were a ton of people out and it was extremely safe!  I had so much fun.  Don't worry.  They won't pick and unsafe place for a lot of people to visit.

I've been to both Jamaica and Haiti and I never felt scared or anything like that. I think as long as your going on an excursion or staying near people from your ship you'll be fine. Just don't go off alone because that would be kinda risky. But yeah there is crime but you won't feel threathened or scared.
