Question:

Cruise documentation - I have my birth cert & drivers license - but they don't match...?

My divorce was final at the end of August... Social Security is taking their sweet time changing my name on my social security card. Therefore, I haven't been able to change my name on my drivers license.

My cruise leaves on Oct. 29. My travel docs are in my birth name (thought I'd have enough time to get my name changed back). I have my birth cert (in birth name) and drivers license (in married name) and a certified copy of my divorce judgement with my name being restored to my birth name.

Will this be enough for immigration?

  1. Are you sure the DMV won't make the change with just your divorce papers? I had absolutely no problem doing this.

  2. Your cruise tickets must match your ID.  There is no exceptions and they will deny you boarding.  I suggest having the cruise line change your name to your married one.  They will charge you a fee, but this is a fee you would rather pay than to not get to go on your cruise and they will not refund your money if they deny you boarding.

  3. Your birth certificate with your drivers license and your divorce judgement will be enough. If you can change your drivers licenses in the mean time then you won't neet your divorse papers.

Your social security card won't help at all.

  4. If the cruise doesn't leave the U.S., then you probably won't pass through customs at all and they probably won't check anything except to see if your photo ID matches the name on the reservation.

Go online and see if you can check in online (many of the big cruise lines let you do this now).  For clarification, change the name on the reservation to "Jane Maiden Married" so both your last names are on there.  Then call their 1-800 number to verify the rules.

You'll probably be fine. Have a great cruise! =)

  5. and a passport

  6. Your passport and your birth-certificate must match. Hands down. With all the Terrorist activity they will not let you back into the US without them matching. For all they know the divorce papers could be fake. Even with a notary stamp. You drive to your local Social Security office and take in your divorce papers and get a new card. It should take them a whopping 30 min at the most.

  7. How can anyone say your passport and birth certificate must match?  Most married women have different names on the two documents!  I would think the documents you have will be fine as long as your divorce papers show that your name change is in the process.  They have eased up on security lately and will probably only look at your birth certificate and cruise ticket.

    Happy cruising!

  8. When you booked your cruise, what name did you give them? Because when I book cruises, I am told I have to give my client's legal name, which means whatever is on your passport or birth certificate. Now, if the name is different on the driver's license, that's fine. But it has to match what's on your birth certificate. I would ask the cruise line just to be sure. Also, check with the State Department. I will give you the website address so you can go through the site to get the information you need. Just so you know, next year, you will need to get your passport. On 01/01/07, all sea travel is now requiring that all passengers have their passports. How do I know all of this? I'm a Cruise Consultant, and this is what I do.
