Question:

Cruise of out Manhattan (New York) Cruise Port, Rough Water?

Has anyone been on a cruise leaving Manhatten (New York) cruise port heading to the Caribbean? I'm looking at a cruise that leaves late April-early May. I live in NJ so I know the weather won't be too bad. It will save a lot because I won't have to fly.

My concern is the water conditions going down and coming back. Is it the water rough? If I have seasickness pills or a patch, will I feel anything? If it's rough waters, I'll pay the extra and fly down to Florida.

  1. I've been out of Manhattan and Bayonne, NJ and yeah, the waters are a little rough. I just got off Royal Carribean's Explorer of the Seas which was out of Bayonne. The water is a little bit rough, but nothing at all to make you sick, unless you get sick over nothing. I get sick very easily, but this was absolutely nothing at all.  You will feel the ship moving, but it's nothing to make you sick at all.  I can't guarentee that it will be the exact same for you, but I can assure you that it's not horrible at all.

I reccomend staying away from the patch because the side-effects are worse than actually getting sea sick.  I strongly reccomend the pill because the side-effects are tiny-nothing and are much more effective.  For something very small, I reccoment the bracelets that you can get from CVS or any other drug store or on the ship even.

Hope I helped and I hope you have an awesome time!!!

  2. First off, to my knowledge, only Norwegian and the QM sail out of New York.  STAY AWAY FROM NORWEGIAN!!!  I digress...That being said, I cruised to the Caribbean from Manhattan the 1st seek of April and the first day and a half at sea was extremely rough.  Half the boat was in their rooms and barf bags were left at all the elevators.  After that, the water was smooth.  Coming back it got a little rough the closer we got to NY.  If you are prone to sickness, I'd recommend flying to a more temperate place.  Have fun!

  3. Well, it can be rough.  However, the patch is a wonderful thing. We had some rough seas in February.  My aunt, who had been pretty sea sick in the past, was using the patch -- and she was 100% fine.  (I opted for the pills, which aren't as strong but don't require a prescription.)

This article has some detailed advice on how to avoid getting sea sick:

    Hope that helps.
