hi im Lucy

I am going on a cruise with my gran and grandad in June and was wondering how stuffy the cruises are. I am told you have to dress up during the evening for dinner. Is this the case and if so what do you wear.

Is there dress codes during the day also?

I am 17

  1. Hi Ms Lucy; you can call the cruise lines or read the brochure. If the have buffet then jeans are fine. Do not worry it will not be like visiting a nursing home. There will be people of all ages. Take some clothes along like the ones your grandparents wear to go out to eat & some you feel comfortable in. You will be fine.

    Relax & ENJOY.

  2. It depends which cruiseline you ar going with. P&O are quite 'posh' you need to wear formal evening wear at dinner, smart casual in the daytime. Fred Olsen Lines - you can choose whether to wear formal (dinner jacket bowtie cummerbund..) or smart skirt/blouse  trousers shirt and tie  but daytime smart clothing.  Easycruise (which i dont think youre grandparents would have chosen) wear modern everyday wear and dress up at night but its far more casual.

Cruises nowadays are not as pompous as previously. Just dress smart, comfortable but not too much that it will embarrass your grandparents if you have b***s popping out every step you take   lol. Enjoy yourself.

  3. Check with the cruise line you are travelling with and then you will know exactly what to expect

  4. I went on my first cruise last summer and had a fantastic time.

We ate in the restaurant every evening The only night you had to really dress up was on captain`s night apart from that the only thing they asked was no shorts and smart casual.

We went with Thomson on the Emerald it was wonderful, but I have just heard that this is the Emeralds last year, because she is the oldest of their ships.

Sorry I meant no shorts in the evening, you would wear your normal holiday clothes during the day.

  5. NO!ya but it is true u have to look nice for SOME dinners, cause somtimes they have like "special" formal dinners...

  6. The evening dinners, if you eat in the dining hall, are formal but not ballroom formal, just casual formal.  I nice dress for a woman or and nice outfit (slacks/dress shirt) for a guy is required.  I would HIGHLY recomment that you go to atleast one.  Other than the food being first class....the interaction that you get with other cruise guest and the wait staff is something that can't be replicated eating at other areas of the ship.  The best advice is to HAVE FUN and enjoy the time you have on the boat.

  7. Cruises are not stuffy at all.  I'm sure you will find lots of teens your age on board the ship to hang out with.  During the day, you can just wear your normal clothes, like shorts and t-shirts.  You can also wear bathing suits.  You do want to look decent in the dining room at night.  You can usually just wear a skirt or dress pants.  On formal nights (usually just 2 of them), you will want to wear a nicer dress.  Really, you should be so thankful for this opportunity to go on a cruise.  They are so much fun - you'll have a blast.

  8. When you are on the ships, you honestly don't realise how many people there actually are on it! You barely see the same people twice!

Normally for a 7 day cruise there are 2 formal dinner on which you would wear something along the lines of a cocktail dress etc. However if you dont have a posh dress, just dressing a tad smarter than usual should be ok. However, if you still do not want to participate in the formal dinners (even though it is great fun dressing up!) you can eat in other places on the ship (e.g. when i went on Royal Caribbean they had a Johnny Rockets where you/the kids could eat).

During the day I was not aware of any particular dress codes, just relax, have fun and enjoy it!

  9. See your cruise lines homepage for more info about different dresscodes. But I think that you can relax as long as youre going with one of the big seven. For evening I would recomend what you would take on a trip to a downtown reasturant. On a seven day cruise there is one or two formal nights that requires tuxedo for men and dresses (cant get the proper word) for women but as long as you skip Jeans cloth I guess everything is ok. Most cl want kick you out of the reasturant for wearing wrong cloths if you are proper dressed.

As for daytime anything goes. But most cls dont let you have bathing clothes in resturants so I would recomend a quick change for lunch if youre going to have it in the main restaurants. But there are usually casuall eaterys close to the pools that let you have bath cloths so dont worry.

Relax and ask pursers desk if it is something that you wounder about regarding dressing up. Good luck and have a nice cruise. Johan

  10. Oooh don't worry!!  I just got back from a crusie...  They are not stuffy at all, you feel like you are just in a nice hotel you don't even feel like it is a  boat.  When you go to dinner you could wear anything really the wouldn't care but.. you should were maybe just a nice pair of pants or capris or a skirt with a pretty nice shirt.. And you can wear ANYTHING in the day.. you can walk around in a bathing suit all day if you like.  You don't need shoes our anything!  Durning the day clothes don't matter at all!  You are going to have a great time.

    Hope this helps=)

  11. It would depend on what cruise line you go on. We have been on Carnival and Royal Caribbean and they are as casual or as posh as you want them to be. On a 7 day cruise, there will be 2 formal nights. What that means is if you go to the main dining room on those nights, they request you not to wear jeans or shorts. I can tell you that last year my 17 year old didn't want to dress up for dinner, but when he saw all the girls dressed up, he was glad he did. No dress codes during the day. Relax, you will have a great time.

  12. I have been on a cruise and I swear people just wear exactly what they want, casual, smart, dressy, anything goes. Not only that, you can buy beautiful cocktail dresses for about £12/15 from Asda/Sainsburies that look worth about £100.

You totally wear casual gear all day, shorts/T-Shirts, whatever. In the evening you dress for dinner...i.e. nice dress/trousers/nice top....anything. Don't worry, cruises are do as you please and how you would dress at home for day/restaurant/day trip. Just relax, no one is ar*ed and no one notices. You won't even meet the same people, there are so many thousands on the ship, you never meet the same people twice...have fun, that's what it is about.

Another thing is this..........on formal nights [so called]  the captain comes on a balcony and welcomes all but you don't have to dress up if you don't want. You have to look presentable for the restaurants as you have to do at home but not particularly for the captain/formal nights. You could just have a nice linen dress or a nice top and trousers on formal nights, listen to the captain's speel and then go and do your own thing.

My grandaughter [20] came with us and she wore totally whatever was trendy. midrift showing.you know the deal with youngsters. It is totally whatever you would wear at home for whatever occasion. It is so relaxed it is unbelievable. Just have fun wear whtaever you would wear at home, it's no different.

And trust me, if it's Princess or any other American cruise line, the Americans have no dress sense whatsoever and are usually overweight anyway.....ahhhhhhhh

  13. Well Lucy it depends upon what cruise line you are going on as to how "stuffy" things will be.  If you are going on a luxury cruise line like Crystal or Seven Seas it may be stuffy and you will have to dress up (in a dress or skirt & blouse) for dinner each day.

If you are going on Holland America, Princess or Celebrity it will be somewhat "stuffy" because the passengers will be older and more reserved, but you don't really have to dress up for dinner every day, you go sports or resort casual.  That's attire that you would expect a person to wear in a business office, (like a bank employee), shirt with a collar, slacks, skirt, blouse, etc.

Then if you are on ships by Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Disney, or Norwegian there will be little if any stuffiness.  First of all, all three of these cruise lines, like most of the others that I have mentioned, have programs just for teens.  They also have an area of the ship called the teen club, or some such name, where teens ages 13 to 17 can hang out.  Royal Caribbean cruise line calls its teen club 'FUEL' and it has its own area of the ship and disco for teens.  Carnival has "club 02" which is for teens 14 to 17.  Teens can hangout with their friends and watch a movie, listen to the latest music, play video games or join karaoke jam sessions.  The evenings at and about dinner time are more relaxed on these ships.  Just put on some casual clothes and you can go just about anywhere on ship.  Just don't try to wear swim wear and flip flops, especially in the main dining room.

On all of these ships there is a formal dining room that your grands will want you to have dinner in with them.  But there are also places where you can eat casual and I am sure that your grands will understand if you want to "hang out" with the other teens that you meet and skip the main dining room.

The dress on all ships is casual all day until 6:00PM, so take:

    -swim wear (at least 2),

    -shorts, tank tops and "T's"

    -sandals,

    -beach shoes,

-your snorkel equipment if you have it,

    -sun glasses and sun screen,

    -lotions,

-a cap or big hat for the sun,

-a book if you are a reader,

    -your music player,

-sneakers and clothes to workout in if you like to use the gym,

    -good walking shoes,

    -your camera, and

-other personal toiletries including tooth paste, mouth wash or lotions.

After 6:00 PM they request that you wear the  "sports or resort casual" attire that I mentioned above.

Your cruise will have a formal night or two when you can wear your best stuff and get pictures taken, and maybe meet the ship’s Captain. The formal nights are REQUESTED not required attire. You will not be denied entry to the main dining room if you decide not to dress up, as long as you are at least sports casual.
