  1. You should take the minimum amount of cash you think you'll need [tips, souvenirs, food, etc], a credit card [if you'll be shopping], the info from your daily activity sheet that gives the name of the cruiseline's shore contact, ship ID card.

If you're going on your own, you may want to take either your passport or a copy of it [cruisers debate which is better], because if you get left behind you want to be able to get out of the country.

Best bet for the excursion is not to bring anything valuable that you can't keep on you, unless you can leave things on the bus that the ship's excursion uses.  While in the water you can use a "water wallet".

You can get lots of info about this and any and all other cruise topics at CruiseCritic.com.  Just click on "Boards" at the top of the page and go to the topic you're interested in.  You might especially want to check "Ports of Call".

  2. If you are going on an organised ship's excursion, you can leave the gear that you don't need on the coach. The guide will tell you that it's OK to leave it.

The driver usually stays on the coach or sits beside the bus while you are away.

If you are going swimming or something like it, the tour guide will watch your gear while you are doing it.

Remember that the guide and driver are as interested in keeping your stuff safe as you are, it causes them all sorts of grief and aggravation if a customer loses something or has something stolen.

I have been on a lot of cruises and haven't lost anything so far.

The best thing to do is to just take the minimum. A beach bag or similar with a few dollars for refreshments or souvenirs, sun screen, camera and clothes.

  3. In each state room there is also a lockbox, that you pick the code for.

  4. Okay we have been on 3 caribbean cruises and have had the same problem. But we found something to fix it. THere are special waterproof boxes you can get to bring with you. They are small and you can wear them around your neck or around your wrist anyway really. As for the stuff that won't fit that you absoultuly HAVE to bring I would just leave it somewhere where you think its safe and keep checking to make sure its still there. Like we went snorkeling and after a while didnt want to so we left the stuff there under a towel and went swimming. We were always keeping an eye out and never had a problem. If anything talk to an employee on your ship they will have ideas too. Sorry I wrote so much! :-) Have fun!
