Question:

Cruise ship job help!?!?!?

by  |  earlier

I already know a lot about cruising and the kind of work but I am more inerested in getting some information from someone who actually worked ON a cruise ship. Here are my questions:

1). Are Americans favored for youth staff jobs?

2). Is Disney cruises or Royal Caribbean good companies to work for?

3). Is a job for the cruise staff good?

4). I am a Baptist christian who believes in modest dressing so on my time off would there be any problem with me wearing skirts only? I understand and would be fine for my uniform that would be fine but on my time off?

5). Also, if I were to work on the cruise director staff it metioned things about dances. We don't believe dancing is right and I don't want to participate in that so would i be allowed not too? Or would i have to?

*** Thanks for ANY help!!!*** I really want anyone whose worked on a ship but if anyone knows the answer to any of these questions that would be great!! Thanks a lot! God bless you!

  1. Okay...I'm gonna try to help you...as best I can.

1).I don't know...I've hard a lot of negative things about how they treat Americans on some of the international ships...however..NCLA (Norwegian Cruise Line America) has American flagged ships with the majority of the employees being U.S. citizens.

2).  To my understanding...Disney Cruises pays their employees 30% more than other cruise lines and I've heard Royal Caribbean is a good company to work for.

3).It may greatly depend on your position as a cruise staff member.  As part of the cruise staff you can be anything from rock climber instructor to some kind of hostess..but if you're talking about the people who work directly under the cruise director...I'm gonna say...you might not like it because of your beliefs...as part of the cruise staff there are a lot of things that you might have to participate in that might offend you..ex. s**y legs contest (among the passengers), wearing costumes you might consider risque, and leading the passengers in some kind of dance routine.  Remember you are part of the "Entertainment" staff!  I don't know how you feel about it, but sometimes you might even have to wear a swimsuit...I wouldn't do that myself...lol  I think they look for pretty liberal people from what I've seen, although I could be wrong.  Plus the pay is not really all that great...but there is still an opportunity to save money because your room and board is free. : )

4).Your time off, is "your" time off..you can wear what you want, but there might be a "closed toe" shoe requirement while on the ship on your time off...if you're leaving the ship it's usually ok.

    5). See #3

There are many jobs on a cruise ship...I suggest you go directly to the cruise line websites to the career section and check out the open positions, they usually give descriptions of the jobs and what is required.  Everything from Front Desk (hotel) staff to Excursion/Tour staff to Restaurant Hostess to Accounting Dept. to Librarian to Youth Counselors to Room Steward...the positions are endless!!!  (It just depends on your experience)

I was a waiter and it was a little stressful, but worth it. (p.s. they call EVERYONE a "waiter" even girls.)

    Try some of these:

    Norweigan Cruise Line

    Disney Cruises

    Royal Caribbean

    Carnival Cruises

    I hope this helped...Good Luck!
