  1. Captain's night is a good opportunit to wear a tux as all the ladies usually dress up and it is much nicer if the men wear dinner jackets or tux.  There are not many opportunities to dress up these days so enjoy it.  I have been on several cruises and always enjoyed these nights.  Have a wonderful time.

  2. If you can get hold of a Berlitz travel book called "Ocean Cruising & Cruise Ships" by Douglas Ward who is reckoned to be the world's foremost authority on cruising, you will be able to read all about Thomson "Spirit" from a guy who has travelled on every ship there is.

I believe that the bookshop "The Works" has the 2005 edition for sale for about £5, and for anyone considering a cruise it is well worth buying.  If not check out your library.

He looks at each ship under the following headings:

    Overview

    Suitable for:

    Accommodation:

    Cuisine/Dining:

    Entertainment:

    Spa/Fitness:

Each ship is given a target score of 2,000 points and (sounds like YA!) what they have achieved.

I've only cruised with P & O from Southampton, which is fairly easy for us and without the hassle of flying.  It also means that you aren't limited by luggage weight.

Black tie was expected on some nights if we chose to eat in the dining room, but we could have dressed tidily and eaten in the Bistro, for example, instead.

Flip flops, trainers, jeans, and similar were not allowed in the dining rooms even on the "Casual" evenings.  Formal evenings are usually ones at sea and not the first and last nights.

  3. you should go to the ..cruise addicts forum, it's good and covers loads of companies/cruises

    it's

  4. actually you wear cut off jeans and a tank top

  5. Most cruise lines expect men to be in a suit, must be collar and tie. Ladies are expected to wear a cocktail or evening dress.  However you don't have to attend the formal dining room if you'd prefer not to. If you want though then you'll need to dress for it.  Check out the web site as they may give you more info there. Oh and enjoy the cruise

  6. you should wear a lab coat because cruise ships are nothing but huge Petri dishes!!!

  7. I've never been on that cruise line, but I have been on a cruise. It is great! You do not have to wear a tux on captain's night, but you can. There is a place on the ship where you can rent a tux if need be. If you don't wear a tux, you can always just wear some slacks and a blazer. Just dress up for a really nice dinner. God bless!

  8. Go on the Queen Mary 2 insted, then you can really dress up!

  9. Since Thomson is a British line, they are relatively more formal. From their FAQ:

    http://www.thomsonbeach.co.uk/th/cruise/...

'Formal' nights such as the Captains' c ocktail party and gala dinner lets you pull out all the stops if you wish. Dinner jackets and c ocktail dresses will fit right in and gentlemen should at least wear a jacket and tie. There is one formal night on a seven-night cruise.

    Hope that helps.

And if you're up for sharing photos/stories of your cruise, you are welcome to an online Cruise Journal (it's free) here:

Not that many people get to go on Thomson, so it would be great more information on what it's really like!

  10. I haven`t been on the Thomson Spirit, but did go on the Thomson Emerald last July. Everyone who wants to meet the Captain, or are dining in the main restaurant, on Captains night dresses up, some wear tuxedos, some wear kilts and others wear suits, the choice is yours. Personally I think the tuxedo looks the best.

Hope this is of some help, and have a good trip

  11. I have been on the Thomson Spirit on two cruises and the on the formal nights everyone dresses up for the formal nights. Suits, dinner suits, tux and kilts. If you've got it, wear it. It's nice to dress up and get a good photograph taken.
