If my ship is in port from 8-5pm will I have time to rent a car and travel the island without risk of missing the last tender back to the boat?? Where is a good place to rent a car close to the ship?

  1. why rent at all (you would have to worry about insurance,

or then you have to find a place that sells Mexican insurance

    and I belive

a lot car rental agency will only rent to you only if you

keep the car over 24 hours (you cant return the car the same day

there bound be buses/taxis to get you where you want to go

  2. Yes, I have docked there several.. times.. one of those times we rented a jeep It was abt 80.00 for half a day plus gas..(be sure and fill up BEFORE you get it back to the rental agency or they will charge you an arm and a leg per gallon :) that was plenty of time to see all of the countryside that we wished to see.  There were 4 of us so it was 20.00 for each person..It is not very big it is about 30 miles north-south and 10 miles east-west, although it is is the largest Atlantic island of Mexico. The roads are not the greatest either..San Miguel is where the ships dock  and is basically the only *town* on the island.  I understand that  Hurricane Wilma destroyed the docking area and now you must be tendered to shore . Your booking agency will be able to answer that question..  I do not remember the name of the rental company but I think we asked for and received help from the shore excursions people on our ship.  Check with your booking agent and they may be able to help you set this up before you leave home...  Hope this has helped..and have fun.....ICozumel is one of the best in the Caribbean for snorkeling and scuba diving..and I have cruised..(a total of 6 cruises)  to almost all of the islands in the Western/Eastern/Southern Caribbean....BTW insurance was NOT a problem...But I dont remember if it was included in the cost or if we were covered by our home insurance...I do remember only one of us (my husband) was allowed to drive the Jeep...BTW to see the best ruins take the helicopter trip offered by most of the cruise ships excursions...expensive (usually 100-120 per person) but well worth it...

  3. Hi,

Not sure which cruise dock you will dock at. If it's Royal Caribbean you'll be about 2.5 miles from town. If you are in town, San Miguel you are right in the heart of town. I would grab a cab it will cost you $3.00 to $4.00 to get to Les Pay Rentals near the Barracuda Hotel. You can rent a Jeep for about $30.00 to $40.00 a day. It's

negotiable, so get your best deal.

To drive around the island it will be a real easy drive. Head south on the street you rent the Jeep on (Ave. Rafal E. Melgar) ask the dude for a map. The drive to the other side of the island will take you about 45 minutes or less. Once on the road you'll drive at 90km/hr. If you stop it will take you longer. If you want a fun place to stop, make it Laguna Chankanaab Park. This is a great [place to snorkel. If you don't dive or snorkel continue around the lsland, you will get close at Punta Sur(South Point). Once on the backside you will see a lot of open beach. Make sure you drive up the island and stop at Coconuts on the hill. A great place to unwind and see the photo albums. The entire drive with a couple of stops with take you less than two and a half hours. On the backside road you will come to the cross road and this is one place to look for bargains on gifts and purchases. Make sure you negotiate for your best deal. So you can plan your day based on the travel time around the island. Remember the island is 12 miles long and 6 miles wide. For the ruins there is not much left. You have two sites El Cedral on your way south and San Gervasio on the cross road.

Plan your day once you are on the backside of the island it will take you about 2 hours to drop off the jeep and get back to your ship via a taxi.

    Enjoy

  4. I've been several times and not really sure I'd like to rent a car...and if the ship is docking in Cozumel then you'd have to tender to the mainland (Playa del Carmen) to get to the ruins in Tulum and it's a TINY place there...I don't remember seeing anywhere to rent a car.  Stick with the ship's shore excursions to be safe...they're more expensive but you're well taken care of...the drive from Playa del Carmel to Tulum is well over an hour...and the return trip includes soda and cerveza (beer)!  Plus, you'll have an escorted guide who will be able to tell you about everything.

On my last cruise, we did an "Authentic Mexican Cuisine" excursion which was about $70pp but included the transportation to/from...full bar for the day, and we cooked seriously authentic food and then got to eat it...it was a great (private) beach resort so we brought our bathing suits and got in the ocean for a while, and this was ON Cozumel so when we got back to the ship, we still had time to hit the 1/2 Senor Frogs before the ship departed.

  5. Unless the rental car was waiting when you docked FORGET IT! We rode horses to see the ruins, that took 4 hours, the tours are all that long...The beaches on the East side are Bonita!!!

You need at least half a day to explore and enjoy the beaches The turtles are laying eggs now, s-o-o cool. They close the road after 6 ish every night for these two months in summer.

Have a great time, Come visit when you can stay longer.....

  6. Ace through executive car rental...

  7. It depends on whether you dock at the International pier or further down. But either way it is cheaper and easier to rent a moped unless you are really going somewhere far (Cozumel is largely unpopulated, yet not really that big) If it's not a restaurant, bar or scuba shop it will probably be a car or moped rental place. You'll find most all the tourist-y stuff on the main street you see when you step off the pier or within 4-6 blocks up the side streets connected to the main street. Taxis are everywhere too. Don't let them charge you out the nose though.

  8. On the main street off of the pier you can rent cars, mopeds ext...

Yes you can be back in time, just watch the clock.

It will not be cheap though.
