  1. Although I agree with the previous answer, my comment would be that the cheapest and "best" way to see somewhere are not always one and the same.

For the most convenient, stress-free way to see Rome, take the excursion.  No worries, fair value for money, and if the worst happens, you know the ship will wait for you.

If you are looking to save a few pennies (quite a bit actually!) and feel more adventurous, I would suggest hopping on the train from Civitavecchia to Rome - its extremely cheap and very easy.  There is a good website at www.italiarail.co.uk

Once in Rome, you can then hop on a guided tour bus.

Another option would be to join www.cruisecritic.co.uk and start a "roll-call" for your particular sailing.  You can see who else is on your particular sailing, group together and hire a guide and bus for the day. That way, you can see exactly what you want to see, and it won't likely work out much more than the tours that Thomson sell.

    Have a great time.

  2. the best idea is to take the tour offered on your ship, they take out all the worry, once you have booked they will guide you.Book coaches, getting you to see what most people would enjoy, give you time to take in the sean and relax, doing it your self isn't easy you'll get on a service bus stopping every other third of a mile when you get there there's always some one waiting to pick pocket, rip you off or you can always lose your way not seeing what you went missing the bus back and missing the ships departure
