Are the sea's kinda rough from the mainland to Hawaii? I have cruised quite a bit and can take some ocean motion but not a whole lot. Is there a better time of year to find calmer seas?

  1. Definitely varies by time of year.  According to my NOAA charts (sorry, only have as PDF, not as a link), the wave heights off the Windward islands are highest November-April, pretty good May-October.

If you're concerned, you might want to check out this fairly comprehensive guide to sea sickness preventatives:

All that said, there's a lot of rumbling right now that US Customs and Border Patrol will shut down cruises from the Mainland to Hawaii, and effectively only allow NCL's US-flagged ships to serve Hawaii.  It's a long story, but you might want to keep an eye out for changes in the next month or so.

  2. When I went, the seas were like glass.  It was amazing.  I guess that's why it's called "Pacific" (calm).

  3. I don't know, but I'm sure many people at CruiseCritic.com do.  Go there and click on "Boards" and then either "Ports of Call" or  under the line you're using.  If you can't find what you need to know, you can ask and others will help you out.  [You'll have to join to ask questions, but it's free.]
