Question:

Cruising - how bad for the environment is cruising?

I have always, always wanted to go on a cruise and for the first time think I can financially handle it. I am thinking of a cruise around the Norweigan fjords I try to be very environmentally conscious when I travel though (not flying) so I'm concerned if going on a cruise might actually be a very unenvironmentally friendly way to travel. Does anyone know more about this?

  1. Cruises are very bad for the environment - look at the size of the smoke stacks on cruise ships... you should swim or ride a bike.

  2. the cruise lines are trying to be better about caring for environment.  there are signs now , people have options to not have so many towels / sheets changed in room.

the recycle their own water on ship .   do not dump offshore.  there is an environmental hotline if any passenger sees anything odd.

i do not know how they are doing ... if they are walking the walk. but do know at least they are talking the talk.

hope so ... the environement is important / we must preserve for the future generations to enjoy.

  3. gabykawa is right, theres worse pollution been kicked into the atmosphere than cruise ship smoke, but i know it is been looked into. get on your cruise mate and the fjords are gorgeous. enjoy youreself cos i will at the end of sept when we go cruising the med..whoa cant wait.

  4. Think of it this way - that ship is gonna sail whether you are on it or not.............SO GET ON IT!!!!

  5. Forget about it. Go get your cruise and enjoy it.

If you really really really don't want to affect the environment, pack yourself in an airtight capsule. Ideally, ship yourself out to space but the rocket is going to cause some disturbance.

We affect the environment every time we take a breath. This idea of we being able to produce significant change is a joke. It doesn't mean that we shouldn't be careful and keep our environment clean. But I'm not worried about my "carbon footprint". The only thing that this stupid idea brought to us is a market place to trade "carbon credits". Something where governments and corporations are going to profit from.

You worked hard for that money, get your cruise and enjoy.

  6. Cruise lines feel the same as you do.  The Roral Caribbean cruise line has a program which is known as "Save the Waves".  Check out their site.
