Question:

Crusader454/Borg Warner pinned shaft question

I have pinned shafts in my boat. It has solid couplings with the key in the keyway. I had a 1 inch piece of the pin shear and go flying across the engine room. Need to get the rest out and replace with new. I need tips and ideas on how to get the rest of the pin out. I was told not to disconnect the coupling from the tranny or I'll be aligning the engine. I have a 5lb maul and some drift pins. Also, what holds the pin in? It had electric tape wrapped around the coupler.. but that cant be it..can it?

  1. If your in the water-you will need to secure the prop shaft so it will not leave the packing gland and let the boat sink. I know it doesn't sound likely, but that's boating for you. The pins should be a press fit. many put a hose clamp over them so they don't fly when they fracture but then you don't know if they are failing till after the fact. I have only aligned  Velvet drive but would guess its quite similar. I think 8 hours is a little long for an engine alignment. It should be real close to alignment or the drive pins would be the least of your problems. The previous post was accurate.

ps- would be careful with that big hammer around those big Monel shafts-that stuff is pretty malleable. You don't want to skip rope after you are done-use a special press made just for such a problem. Wish I had a big boat with these problems!

  2. Remove the bolts split the coupling and drive the key way out as there is something wrong as the key is installed & removed from the coupling side>Sounds like it has sliped out of the coupling>It won't change the alignment > But check it before installing the bolts> There are 2 square bolts on 2 side of the coupling that have detents they go into that keeps the shaft in the coupling>Check the coupling on the shaft as if it is sloppy replace it>
