Crusaders’ Centre Gareth Thomas injured in Super League
Gareth Thomas, of the Celtic Crusaders was injured once again in a match against Hull Kingston Rovers (Hull KR).
The rugby league club, Crusaders, have been established since 2005, playing their first match in the National League Two of 2006. They became a part of the Super League in 2008, and played the first match in the Super League in 2009. Thomas has been playing
for the Crusaders since March 2010. His joining with the Crusaders was a move from the rugby union to the rugby league. He was previously a player with the rugby union’s Cardiff Blues.
Thomas has had an exceptional career history, having played with both the union at a stretch and the league much more recently. After he joined the Celtic Crusaders, he played his first ever league match against Catalan Dragons, in the Super League 2010.
Although the Crusaders won this match by 14-6, Thomas himself was injured and his head injury resulted in his leaving the field after only playing for 30 minutes. Another injury however, prevented him to finish his first season with the league’s Crusaders
come to an end.
Crusaders’ centre Thomas then went ahead, after his first season, to play the 2010 European Cup. While playing for the Engage Super League match Round 22 in July, the player was once again injured, when the team was facing the Hull KR. The injury sustained
during the Crusaders loss of 38-10, on July 9, is a broken left arm.
His contract with the Crusaders has just been renewed for the 2012 season, while the Crusaders are currently playing in the Super League. However, with his injury, he is expected to be out of the game for at least two months.
Iestyn Harris, the Crusader’s coach is, nonetheless, showing a positive streak with respect to Thomas’ hurt arm. He is expecting Thomas’ recovery for the match against Wigan Warriors and also the Four Nation tournament, taking place in October, against England.
Harris’s hope for the above match and tournament is also influenced by the fact that the seven banned players of the Crusaders are resuming their training on July 11.
Also, Thomas himself hopes to pull through and be able to play the Super League’s last match for the Crusaders, playing against the Warriors on September 9.
He says, “With a bit of PMA (positive mental attitude), I can maybe catch the last game of the season…Always best to have a target.”
He shares similar hope with his coach Harris, of being able to be fit enough in order to play the Four Nations as well.
Despite his injury, which resulted in a broken and his being out of commission for two months, Gareth Thomas is anticipating his recovery, wishing to jump back into the game, in order to play in the Super League and the Rugby League Four Nations 2011.
