Crusaders’ Richie McCaw to miss thriller against Blues - Super Rugby news
Crusaders’ Richie McCaw is confirmed to miss a big match in the current Super Rugby season against the New Zealander top spot Blues on June 11. The veteran McCaw has been suffering from a foot injury which he sustained during their last match against the
Queensland Reds on May 29.
The All Blacks and Crusaders skipper has been suffering from various injuries throughout the Super Rugby championship. The Crusaders team doctor, Deb Robinson, confirmed today on June 7, that McCaw will not be able to participate in the crucial match against
the Blues on Saturday. The doctor further stated that McCaw has been asked to rest at least for three weeks in order to avoid further damage.
The injury has come out at a very critical time for the Crusaders as they are coming off a controversial defeat by the Queensland Reds. The Reds were awarded with a last minute penalty as McCaw put an unnecessary hand into the ruck. The injury has also deprived
the player from rest of the Super Rugby round matches.
Deb Robinson further stated that the decision has been taken after keeping the forthcoming Rugby World Cup well in view. She added, "He has got some pain in his foot in a different place at the bottom of one of the screws in
there. Scans show there is lots of activity and healing, the bone looks thin. We think some discretion here is the sensible thing and Richie will benefit from two or three weeks less load through it.”
She also said that, “It is not an 'oh my goodness' scenario. It is related but the pain is in a different part of the foot. There is nothing sinister in this, the time is right to do it [rest] now. Richie could have boxed on
but he mentioned it did not feel quite right so we went from there.”
The Crusaders coach Todd Blackadder, has shown his concerns over the injury of the flanker. He may give the opportunity to Matt Todd or Whitelock at McCaw’s position in the next clash of Super Rugby against the Blues.
