Legendary Dutch footballer, Johan Cruyff, has thrown any rumours of him taking up the role of Director of Football at Anfield out the window.
When Fenway Sports Group took over http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Liverpool-c39809 they changed the management set up and the transfer policy as well. One role they introduced was the of the Director of Football who’s responsibilities, among other things, included scouting out players for the
club based on the transfer policy.
Damien Comolli, who had the same role at Tottenham Hotspur at one time, was hired for the role and the Frenchman was instrumental in Liverpool signing seven players over the course of his tenure.
While the likes of Luis Suarez and Jose Enrique proved popular among fans others such as http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Jordan-Henderson-c19102, Stuart Downing and Charlie Adam never lived up to their billing. Andy Carroll was, until recently, thought to be an expensive flop, yet his performances
in his previous two outings have gone a long way in finally endearing him to the home fans.
However, on a whole Liverpool spent a lot of money on players who did not perform and although Comolli cited family reasons as his main motive for stepping down from his post at Liverpool, one can easily picture his hand being forced in the move.
It seems the Reds are already looking for a replacement and according to the media, were apparently lining up a move for Johan Cruyff.
The former Dutch player however has denied the link claiming that he has not been approached by anyone.
“I see my name is being mentioned in connection with Liverpool. I don’t know where that has come from because I have not heard anything from them. There has been no contact whatsoever.”
He continued, “If you just read speculation like this, without any substance to it, there is no point taking it seriously. It is just talk.”
Cruyff does sound like the ideal candidate to take over Comolli’s position and would raise the potential of Liverpool signing higher-calibre players but for now it seems that the former Dutch international is going nowhere. Whether or not that changes over
the course of the next few months is something that everyone will have to wait and see.
