Crysis 2 Single Player Campaign Review: Environments, Sound & Music, The Verdict – PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 & PC
Environments
The environments are all well detailed and the level design is superb throughout. While the objectives may be the same in each level, reaching them is the challenge and as mentioned before, players can go about it in any way they choose.
Sound & Music
The sound effects in the game are a mixed bag. While player movement and object interaction are pretty realistic and convincing, the gunshots and weapons are not.
Footsteps, crashes, radio chatter and dialogue are all top quality and one can notice the effort that the developers put into it and it does a lot to immerse the player. Yet all of that goes out the window when the player fires a gun. The gunshots sound
weak and lack a punch, even without a silencer attachment.
The SCAR and the SCARAB almost seem muted and the shotgun also lacks that distinctive bang that satisfies players as they fire the weapon. Even the sniper rifle lacks the echoing bang that comes with one-shot kills.
The in-game background music on the other hand is something that a person may find in a Hollywood movie. The score amplifies the atmosphere of confusion and desperation very well as there are moments in the game where one could just stand and stare and the
New York skyline with the music playing, though it is not recommended as the player will most probably end up shot to pieces.
The Verdict
Before one gives a final verdict on CryTech’s Crysis 2, one must first recap the strong points and the weak points that the game has.
Pros
+ Stunning visuals and graphics that have raised the bar and set a new benchmark in videogames
+ The ability to choose how a player wishes to complete a certain stage
+ Terrific level design that allows for multiple ways to go about a stage
+ The nano-suit abilities are a nice core gameplay mechanic and make Crysis 2 standout
+ The in-game music is truly spectacular and adds to the overall atmosphere
+ The final stage which is amazing!
Cons
- Poor enemy AI that undoes some of the immersion
- Flat and weak feeling when firing weapons
- Lack of variety in gun types
- Lack of real variety in enemy types as it is the same enemy types over and over again
- Generic plot with a weak twist
- The over powered Stealth mode which allows players to literally walk through the entire game without much of a challenge.
In the end, Crysis 2 is a solid title with very many minor flaws that in the end stop the game from being the premier FPS in the market.
It is a visual spectacle with a great musical score and though it does add plenty of features with the nano-suit, it does not do enough to prevent the player from feeling as if he had ‘been there, done that’.
Crysis 2 is none the less a solid title and should be tried by any fan of the FPS genre, the game gets a solid
8.5 out of 10.
