Crysis 3 Developer speaks out – Video Games Update
Crytek was criticised by fans for their decision to remove the sandbox element from Crysis 2 and go for the corridor shooter approach with explosive set pieces as seen in games like Call of Duty.
“Sometimes there is validity in going along a linear path because you want the player to be in a certain place at a certain time for the epic moments. Then, at other points, you want to broaden out and ensure there are a ton of options and potential presented
to players and let them figure out what to do. We’re taking the best experiences from both Crysis 1 and 2 and combining them, while hopefully avoiding the stuff that didn’t work. CryEngine is a powerful tool and can do both things really well.” said Rasmus
Hojengaard the director of creative development at Crytek.
Rasmus explained that Crysis 3 will still have linear parts just like Crysis 2 but there will also be a lot of open world sandbox levels which will be similar to those of the first game.
The Crysis 3 game-play that Crytek showed at Electronic Entertainment Expo was a treat for the eyes and when asked how will the game fare on the Xbox 360 and the PS3, which are 5-6 years old, Rasmus stated that the team at Crytek has been busy optimising
the engine and he is confident that Crysis 3 will be the best looking game on Consoles.
Crytek is also depending on Crysis 3 to succeed in the market and with the critics because future licencing sales of the CryEngine 3 depend on it. Crytek have had stiff competition with the Unreal Engine 3 from Epic games which was arguably the most popular
game development engine of this generation. Even though the CryEngine 3 looked far superior, it couldn’t compete with the ease of use and the support that the Unreal Engine provided.
Now with Unreal Engine 4 just announced at E3, Crytek is hoping that their engine will beat Unreal engine 4 and become the most licenced engine by other developers. Crysis 3 is planned for a 2013 Q1 release.
