Crystal Langhorne, Erika de Souza, Rebekkah Brunson: Top WNBA performers from 9th June games
Only two games took place in the Women National Basketball Association (WNBA) on June 9, 2011. In the first game of the night, Minnesota Lynx outscored the defending champion Seattle Storm 28-8 in the first quarter and walked away
with an impressive 81-74 victory at Key Arena. Washington Mystics, in the other game, went on a 4-0 in the last 36 seconds of the overtime to earn a hard-fought 98-90 win over the Atlanta Dream at Philips Arena.
Here is a detailed insight into some of the most outstanding performances from the games:
Crystal Langhorne’s phenomenal 30-point spurt
The Washington Mystics forward-centre Crystal Langhorne was on fire in the contest against the Atlanta Dream. The 24-year-old notched a game-best 30 points and pulled out 13 rebounds, shooting an impressive 11-for-17 from free
throw line.
Trailing by 75-68 after three quarters, Langhorne’s put back lay-up put the Mystics ahead by 82-80 with 04:40 to go in the fourth quarter - their first lead since late in the opening quarter. Langhorne scored three of the three
free throws in the closing seconds of the game.
Nicky Anosike’s excellent 24
Nicky Anosike also had a steamy game for Washington. The centre-forward player clinched 24 points along with grabbing 13 rebounds in an action packed game. The 25-year-old scored 13 of her points in the second quarter as the Mystics
managed to cut their deficit to seven at halftime.
Erika DeSouza’s team-high 20
Erika DeSouza did all she could and led Atlanta all the way towards the close-edged game before she left the game with three minutes to go in overtime because of a severe nose injury. DeSouza led the entire Dream with 20 points
and a game-high 14 rebounds it was not enough to help his team win.
The player recorded a tenacious 9-for-12 shooting from the field and pinned in 2-for-2 free throws in the defeat.
Rebekkah Brunson’s fourth consecutive double-double
Rebekkah Brunson played an exceptional game for the Lynx. The entire team was full of praise for Brunson, who registered her fourth consecutive double-double with a team-high 22 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, shooting 9-for-11
from the field.
Additionally, the forward player scored 11 points of her points and eight rebounds in the first quarter of the game, shooting 5 for 6 from the field, as the Minnesota held a 50-24 lead at halftime.
Lindsay Whalen’s superb game-high assists
Lindsay Whalen definitely gave the Seattle Storm some hard time. The 29-year-old guard also had a double-double with 13 points and a game-best 10 assists in the victory. Whalen went 4-for-9 from the field.
Sue Bird’s game-high 24 in the defeat
The Storm guard Sue Bird was the only white spot in the defeat as she scored a game-high 24 points, shooting 10-for-22 from the field, and grabbed three assists.
Trailing by 30 points after first three quarters of the game, the 30-year-old scored 16 points of her points in the final stanza to help cut the deficit to just six points 29 seconds remaining.
