Crystal Langhorne drops 24 points as Washington Mystics beat New York Liberty 70-53  – WNBA Recap
Crystal Langhorne scored 24 points on Friday night to help Washington Mystics get past New York Liberty 70-53.
The win for Washington was their first away from home and also allowed them to end a seven game losing streak. The game was decided in the second quarter, during which Washington got really aggressive which allowed them to cruise
for the rest of the way as the lead never got below 8 points.
“It was big for us to come in and win on the road our last game, Just a change of direction for us. We were being really aggressive offensively,” Langhorne said. “They were getting a lot of second-chance opportunities in the first
quarter and we really focused on boxing out and pushing on transition.”
Monique Currie provided equal support in the game by shooting the ball 5 of 8 from the field for 16 points while Matee Ajavon and Jasmine Thomas scored 7 points each.
From the other side, the offensive load was carried by one Cappie Pondexter who kept trying to keep her team in the game. She finished the night with 22 points and 4 rebounds to her name.
New York came out strong in this one as they managed their way to an early 6-2 lead but halfway through the first quarter, Mystics were able to crawl their way back into the contest and tied the scores up at 8.
Liberty again managed to get their noses infront, courtesy of a 7-0 run but by the close of the stanza, Mystics were back at their tails as they only trailed 16-17.
After making a slow start to the contest, Mystics decided to put their shooting troubles behind them in the second quarter. In the first 8 and half minutes of the frame, they outscored the hosts 20 -6 which allowed them to head
into the interval with a 36-27 advantage.
The second half followed much of the same pattern with Washington continuing to hold their own. Mystics came out in the second half with a 12-6 run and then outscored Liberty 9-4 in the final three minutes of the frame to take
a 58-41 lead into the final quarter.
Pondexter continued to try her best as she scored the first five points of the final period but on the defensive end, Liberty were unable to contain Langhorne who continued to keep the score ticking with relative ease.
Mystics managed to hold New York scoreless for the last 3 and half minutes of the game, capping off a good night’s work with style. During that time, Washington added 9 points to their tally and took this one by a margin of 17
points.
