Crytek believe Tablets to be the future of gaming – Video Games Update
Crytek CEO, Cevat Yerli, has stated in an interview with VG247 that he believes that Tablets will soon be the main platform for gaming and consoles will soon be obsolete.
One of the main reasons behind the sudden rise of tablets is the decision by Microsoft and Sony to extend the current generation console life cycle and push back the long overdue next generation. This has caused a massive brain drain in the game development
industry as many of the developers are ditching console development and are opting for making games for phones and tablets.
Many important developers such as Epic Games, Square Enix, Ubisoft, Electronic Arts and even Crytek themselves have warned Microsoft and Sony about the consequences of delaying the next generation consoles any further. Nintendo however seems to be in a comfortable
place at the moment with its next generation console, the Wii-U, set for release this fall.
Nintendo was also pretty smart to add a ‘tablet’ controller as the main feature of the Wii-U which means that the console will probably be very successful if priced right. Sony and Microsoft won’t be far behind as Sony already has the PlayStation Vita which
could be connected wirelessly to the PlayStation 3 and act like a tablet controller.
Microsoft announced Xbox SmartGlass at this years’ Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) press conference which pretty much allows any tablet device to connect to the Xbox 360 and function as a controller.
“The current generations are drying out, and the longer we wait for the next generation of consoles, the higher the likelihood that they could fall behind tablets in terms of being the first thing people reach for when the time comes to play games. Tablets
are putting pressure on the gaming industry, and taking over in some ways, so that should be kept in mind," stated Yerli.
Many rumours state that Microsoft is likely to release the next generation Xbox before 2014 which means that Sony will be in trouble if they actually decide to go with the ’10 year’ plan with the PlayStation 3 as the console is likely to quickly lose developer
support once the other two next generation consoles (Next Xbox and Wii-U) are out.
