Cuba clinches the semi-final berth at the XI Women’s Pan Am Cup – Volleyball News
Caribbean women’s volleyball team (Cuba) won the quarter-final match against Argentina and secured a spot in the semis of the XI Women’s Pan American Cup.
Cuba took on Argentina at the Gimnasio COBACH in CIUDAD JUAREZ, Mexico on Wednesday and produced the following result, 3-0 (25-18, 25-13, 25-20). A crowd of almost 2,000 people watched the live action of volleyball. Cuban musketeers performed up to the mark
and successfully overcame the resilient rivals.
Yanelis Santos had a big role in her team’s success. She led Cuba on the net and put up a great battle with the rival side. She registered 10 spikes on 12 attempts, added four successful blocks, and also contributed five serve aces. Hence, Santos made a
total of 19 points and settled for the top-scorer’s position in the match.
Her teammates Gyselle Silva, Rosanna Giel and Wilma Salas also contributed to the overall success of the team. They notched up 13, 12 and 10 points, respectively. For Argentina, Lucia Fresco scored team-high 11 points.
Set 1 of the match continued for 23 minutes and Cuban side proved to be better in every aspect. Cuban attack was very affective and Santos added a flurry of points. Likewise, she did a pretty good job at defence. Gyselle also joined hands with Santos and
killed many of the opponents' attack attempts. Finally, the first set came successful for Cuba at 25-18.
Cuba played with more confidence in the following set, while Argentina felt the pressure building up. Argentinean players could not give a good competition to Cuba in the second set and suffered the loss. Cuba improved to 2-0 by winning another set in row.
Third set was different from the earlier two sets. It featured some good action on the net and the fans saw an exchange of long rallies. However, Cuba managed to outdo Argentina with five points and announced match victory.
“We played almost perfect with very few mistakes,” Cuba’s Yusidey Silie stated. “It was a game of typical Cuban volleyball. As semifinalists we achieved our main goal of qualifying to the World Grand Prix.”
“It is always very difficult to play against Cuba, a team with a lot of power,” Argentina’s Emilce Sosa commented. “It wasn’t a good game for us and I hope we can finish playing better.”
Winning Coach Juan Carlos Gala congratulated his team for their victory. He appreciated the serving and reception of his players that actually enabled Cuba to cruise past to victory. On the other hand, his Argentinean counterpart Horacio Bastit acknowledged
that Cuba enjoyed a great form and deserved to win the match. He was impressed by the solid defence of Cuba team.
