Cuba defeats Argentina 3-1: FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship - Volleyball
The Cubans were able to hand out a defeat to the home team of Argentina on August 26th in the second round of the FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship that is currently taking place in Bahia Blanca, Argentina. The win has enabled the Cubans to
head into the semi-final round of the tournament.
The match between the two teams went on for four sets. The first one was bagged by Cuba after the Argentineans failed to swing things in their favour. However, Argentina was able to make the match reach a tie by winning the second set of the game. The third
set started with Cuba coming out strong and staying tough until the very end. The fourth set followed the same path and eventually ended in a match win for the Cubans at 25-22, 22-25, 25-17 and 25-17.
The coach of the Cuban team, Rodolfo Sanchez, shared his feelings in the following words after his team had won the match: “Congratulations to both teams. Argentina is a great team that we admire and respect very much. I think that Gonzalo Quiroga is one
of the best players at this age. I am happy for my players. We showed we have a great physical shape.”
On the other hand, the Argentinean coach, Fabian Muraco, gave the following comments at the press conference: “Congratulations to Cuba as they showed a great type of play at a high level and they could overcome the pressure of the crowd. I wish the best
for tomorrow. We are going to work hard psychologically.”
The first technical time out of the opening set came with the Cubans leading at 8-6 and they were able to extend the advantage to 16-13. The Argentineans kept trailing behind and the Cubans eventually bagged the set at 25-22.
The second set saw the Argentineans leading at 8-4 and they still had the lead when the second technical time out came at 16-11. The Cubans tried to overtake their opponents but Argentina remained successful in bagging a win at 25-22.
The third set remained competitive for the most part and the score was close at 16-13. However, after the two teams came back on to the courts, the Cubans were able to put on a spurt of speed that took them all the way to the end at 25-17. The fourth set
followed the same pattern as its predecessor as the Cubans made short work out of it by securing another win at 25-17.
The Cuban player, Lazaro Fundora, was able to top all scorers by tallying an impressive total of 29 points while the Argentinean lead scorer was Gonzalo Lapera with a total of 18 points.
