The world number one Brazilian men’s national volleyball team played today with the world number six ranked Cuban squad in the third round of the 2011 FIVB Men’s World Cup. The championship is currently being staged in Japan with the match between the Cubans
and the Brazilians held in Hamamatsu.
The competition between the two sides took on thrilling tones as both the teams were not ready to relinquish their dominance, taking the competition to five long and gruelling sets at the end of which the Cubans were able to impress the spectators and their
opponents by bagging a win.
The first set of the match was dominated by the Brazilians as the Cubans took time coming into form. However, the loss of the opening frame got the Cubans to step up their performance in the second set and bag themselves a well fought win. The third set
of the match was the most competitive as both the Brazilians as well as the Cubans remained neck to neck with each other all through but the frame rested with the Cubans in the end. The Brazilians were able to take the match to a decisive fifth by bagging
themselves the fourth. In the end, the Cubans proved to be the better team this time around as they sealed the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 17-25, 25-22, 25-23, 20-25, 15-12.
The coach of the Cuban team, Orlando Samuells Blackwood, expressed himself in the following manner at the press conference that was conducted after the match had reached its close: “Thank for the congratulations from Brazil. I’m satisfied with today’s result
and our performance. Like yesterday we started poor but gained in strength as the game went on. I’m happy to win these two wins.”
On the other hand, the Brazilian coach, Bernardo Rezende, made the following statements: “Congratulations to Cuba, they played a good match again, yesterday they played well too. I think we didn’t play bad, but rather we played ok. It was a good match versus
a good team. They won on their own merits, so congratulations to them.”
