Cuba defeats Japan by 3-0 in FIVB Volleyball Women´s Junior World Championship
The first match of the second round of the FIVB Volleyball Women´s Junior World Championship saw Cuba compete with Japan in Lima, Peru in a Pool G encounter in which the Cuban team dominated 3-0.
Japan put up a good fight in the first and second set of the game but it was not enough to challenge the Cuban team significantly. Cuba handed out a defeat to the Japanese team by tallying the following set scores: 25-20, 25-20 and 25-19.
Pupo Robinson, the coach of the Cuban team, made the following comments at the press conference after his team had won the match: “The team had a new mood and we had accumulated much experience. We have had support from Cuba’s Federation of Volleyball and
that was determinant for winning.”
On the other hand, the Japanese coach, Yasuhiro Fukuda, gave the following statements: “We couldn’t do our best. Cuba is really good and they did not give us a chance of reaching our highest level.”
The first set of the match was a tug of war between the two sides but as the first technical time out neared, the Cubans had the lead at 8-6. However, the Japanese did not give up the chase and got the match into a tie position at 11-11 but the Cubans still
had the lead later on at 16-15. The Cubans did not let go of the advantage and pushed forward until they had bagged the first set of the game at 25-20.
The Japanese did not lose hope and came out strong in the second set of the game. The score was close by the time the two teams reached the second technical time out at 16-15 with Cuba leading. The Cubans did not take much longer to seal the deal on the
second set of the game at 25-20.
Japan started the third set with spirit but Cuba managed to get the lead at 8-6. After that point, the Cubans did not let go of the lead and secured a win at 25-19.
The player that was able to contribute the most to the Cuban side of the score board was Sulian Matienzo as she put up 14 points. Matienzo was helped by Heidy Rodriguez who scored 13 points. On the Japanese side, Mari Horikawa was able to keep the pressure
on the Cuban side by scoring 18 points overall.
The Japanese team has been able to tally a total of two wins in the second round of the tournament while suffering a single loss. On the other hand, the Cubans have registered three wins while undergoing no defeat at all.
