Cuba defeats Korea by 3-1 in Volleyball World League match – Volleyball news
Sunday witnessed a major upset in a match between Cuba and Korea in the Volleyball World League. The clash took place at Suwon, in the province of Gyeonggi, and the crowds saw Cuba take the win at 3-1. The set scores that declared Korea to be on the losing
end for the first time in over a period of 27 years stood at 21-25, 25-23, 25-18 and 25-18.
Despite the fact that Korea was able to take the first set of the game, they were not successful in claiming any of the remaining three. However, in each of the sets that Korea lost, they fought Cuba tooth and nail for most of the game.
The first set started off with both Korea as well as Cuba going in for the kill. The match remained close for the most part and the set saw ties quite a few times. No one was sure where the advantage lay as Korea kept it close at 21-20 with Cuba in the lead.
However, Korea was eventually able to pull up ahead with Cuba trailing behind. Once Korea was in the leading position, it was only a matter of time before the Koreans were able to bag the opening set at 25-21.
Like the opening set of the game, the second set was turning out to be a similar affair. It was as if a tug of war was going on between the two teams, and neither Korea nor Cuba was taking the lead for long. The start and the middle of the game were intense
with Korea in the leading position at 24-23. At such a critical point, the Korean Han Sun-woo made a serious mistake of letting the Cubans score and get into a tie position. Once they were on level ground, the Cubans made a run for it and won the second set
at 25-23.
Winning the second set of the game gave the Cubans all the confidence that they needed and they came out strong in the third set. The superior performance of the Cuban team got Korea under pressure and they responded by committing unnecessary and costly
errors. As a result, it was not a tough job for Cuba to gain a win at 25-18.
The fourth set of the match was also won by the same set score, 25-18.
Interestingly, Korea had managed to pull off a win against Cuba when they met on Saturday. Not only were they able to win the match, they had gained the victory by making a clean sweep over their opponents. With the loss, Korea's 37 game winning stream has
come to an end.
