Cuba defeats Korea by 3-2 in Pool C: FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship - Volleyball
A Pool C match of the FIVB Boy’s Youth World Championship took place on August 21 between the Cuban and Korean squads. The contest between the two sides took five long and gruelling sets to reach their close. After the thrilling struggle, the Cubans ended
up celebrating a win.
The first set of the match started off with both the sides locking horns together in a battle to gain dominance at the courts. However, it was the Korean squad that managed to grab the opening set of the game. After the loss of the first set, the Cubans
rebounded in the second to equalise the match. However, the Koreans tipped the tables in their favour again by securing the third set of the game. The Cubans did not back down and went on to take the match to a fifth set, the final set of the game saw the
Cubans seal the deal on the match at the following final set scores: 24-26, 25-21, 21-25, 25-20 and 15-13.
The coach of the Cuban team, Rodolfo Sanchez, shared his views in these words at the press conference that was conducted after the match: "I congratulate the Korean Team, because they played a great match, although they were out of the best 8. We played
in a smart way."
On the other hand, the Korean coach Eun-Chul Kim, expressed himself in this manner: "We are happy that we got to play against Cuba, because it is a very good team in this championship. We had three terrible mistakes in the last set which cost us the match."
The start of the first set saw both the teams come out strong but the Koreans had the lead at the first technical time out at 8-6 which they were able to extend further. The Cubans were able to close in the gap at 16-15. The two sides fought on till the
Koreans were able to seal the deal at 26-24.
The second set started off with Cuba taking the lead at 8-5 and still marinating the advantage at 16-11. The Koreans tried hard to overtake their opponents but they could not stop Cuba from capping off a win at 25-21.
The third set was as intense as its predecessors with the lead being interchanged between the two parties every now and then. However, the set rested with the Koreans at 25-21. The Cubans got the lead in the fourth set at 8-7 and did not let go of the advantage
till they had earned a win at 25-20. The fifth set saw some impressive display of volleyball skill from both the sides but it ended with the Cubans emerging as the better team as they bagged the final set at 15-13.
Their recent win has enabled the Cubans to get the top slot in the Pool C of the tournament.
