Cuba defeats Puerto Rico by 3-1 in a Women’s Pan American Cup match – Volleyball news
A Pool A match of the Women’s Pan American Cup took place between Cuba and Puerto Rico on Thursday, July 12, 2012. The Mexican city of Ciudad Juarez was playing host to the competition that was taking place in Gimnasio UACJ sports hall. A crowd of 350 saw
the match as Cuba handed out a defeat to Puerto Rico by 3-1.
Cuba took an hour and 25 minutes to make the win over Puerto Rico at the following final set scores: 16-25, 25-15, 25-18 and 25-19.
The head coach of the Cuban team, Juan Carlos Gala, shared his views at the win by making the following comments, “Puerto Rico’s volleyball is almost similar to ours. The girls felt affected in the first set, but recovered. We won the match due to collective
effort, a hard team work.”
On the other hand, the Puerto Rican coach David Aleman gave the following statements about the performance of the Cuban team, “Despite Cuba’s had just arrived to the competition this was a very tough match, their strength was a key and in the end they dominated.”
The highest number of points registered in the match was 16 which the Cuban player Yanelis Santos put up. Santos was helped by her team mate Gyselle Silva who was able to add 14 points to her side of the score board. Other than that, the Cuban players Yoana
Palacios and Wilma Salas kept the pressure on their opponents by adding 12 and 11 points respectively. On the other hand, the most points scored on the Puerto Rican side were 14, which were tallied by Stephanie Enright.
The first set of the match favoured the Puerto Ricans who were able to get the lead early on and extend the gap as the Cubans had their energy level at a low because they had only just arrived for the match. However, Cuba began to close in the gap but the
Puerto Ricans played with more energy that enabled them to take the opening set of the game at 25-16.
The loss of the first set got the Cubans performing better in the second set as they took the advantage and stuck with it. The Puerto Ricans tried to close in the gap but they could not make the score level. Before long, Cuba had stormed ahead with a widening
lead that enabled them to bag the second set 25-15.
The third set saw both the teams stay level for a time but eventually Cuba pushed ahead to get themselves the advantage . Once they had the lead, Cuba did not look back and sped ahead to secure the third frame of the game by a significant margin at 25-18.
The fourth set progressed in the same manner as the previous one and ended up with a Cuban win at 25-19.
