Cuba defeats Turkey by 3-1 in Pool C match of FIVB Women World Grand Prix – Volleyball news
One Pool C match of the 2012 FIVB World Grand Prix - Women saw the Turkish contest with the Cubans on July 10, 2012.
The pool play of the tournament is being hosted by the Korean city of Busan. The battle between the two sides extended to four sets and ended in a win for the Cuban squad.
The first two sets of the match were challenging for both the teams and the match remained equal by the end of them. However, the Cubans were able to bag the third frame with ease that led them to play the fourth set with more energy and thus grab the match
win at the following final set scores: 25-20, 21-25, 25-17 and 25-20.
The coach of the Cuban team, Juan Gala Rodriguez, expressed his happiness at the win by giving the following comments, “Our players were very good today, especially powerful spikes. I think that the strong spike was the key to beat Turkey. I could see that
our team has reached a higher level through the 2012 WGP.”
On the other hand, the Turkish coach, Marco Aurelio Motta, shared his views on the outcome of the match in the following manner, “Cuba showed a very good performance today, especially their strong serve and block. Congratulations to Cuba!”
Despite the fact that the Turkish team had the edge of being the Olympic qualifiers, they had difficulty facing the Cubans mainly due to their tall physical stature as well as the synchronized manner in which they played all through the match. As a result,
it was not a tough job for the Cubans to secure the opening frame of the game at 25-20.
The momentum generated at winning the first set got the Cubans to take the lead early on the second one. However, the Turkish were able to steadily gain on their rivals and secure themselves the second frame.
Unfortunately, for the Turkish squad, they could not repeat the second set win and lost the third frame to the Cubans by a significant margin. The fourth set consequently came easy for the Cubans and gave them the match win as well.
